At some of his recent meetings, Trump has elbowed Dr. Anthony Fauci and other health experts aside to declare that a “miracle” drug for the virus may be just around the corner

If you have put yourself through some of the same hell I have every day by watching Trump’s White House  press briefings (a.k.a campaign rallies), you might wish, right about now, and that one of the reporters would spring to their feet and give him proper hell.

Well maybe what we need is good ol’ Ralph Kramden in the room. Some of you might remember Ralph from that classic 1950s television series ‘The Honeymooners,” that they continued re-running for decade after decade on cable networks.

But even if you don’t remember Ralph, here is someone’s idea of how Ralph would react after a few minutes of Trump inflicting the world with his self-serving crap.

TORONTO, Ontario — The Ontario government is taking further action to stop the spread of COVID-19 by actively recruiting health care workers to increase the frontline capacity of hospitals, clinics, and assessment centres. Today, the province is launching a new online tool that will help match skilled frontline workers with employers.

The new Health Workforce Matching Portal will enable health care providers with a range of experience to join the province’s response to COVID-19. Those providers include retired or non-active health care professionals, internationally educated health care professionals, students, and volunteers with health care experience.

The portal will efficiently match the availability and skillsets of frontline health care workers to the employers in need of assistance to perform a variety of public health functions, such as case and contact management. Continue reading →

BEAMSVILLE in Niagara – Ontario is taking emergency action to address the recent spike in domestic violence reported by victims services organizations during the COVID-19 crisis.

The government of Ontario is providing an emergency payment of more than $2.7 million to support services for victims of domestic violence and other violent crimes in response to the evolving public health crisis and challenges victim service providers are facing.

Victim Services Niagara, providing victim assistance across Niagara, will receive $50,500.00 as part of this one-time emergency payment in addition to its annual funding allocation from the Ministry of the Attorney General. Continue reading →

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA)  recently issued an “enforcement discretion policy.” It suspends important pollution rules and will allow industrial facilities to avoid monitoring and reporting air and water pollution, without penalty, during the Covid-19 crisis.

We understand the need for flexibility during the current crisis, but this is a serious overreach and puts our communities and the environment at risk. We can’t further risk public health and safety in the midst of an unprecedented public health crisis. Continue reading →

As the world reels from the physical, psychological, social and economic effects of COVID-19, millions of people are being temporarily distracted by the Netflix docuseries Tiger King.

Brock University’s Kendra Coulter has remained a strong voice for protecting wildlife and our environment. Join her in championing these issues.

For many, the show has a Jerry Springer effect, allowing viewers to watch — with their jaws dropped — people and places that seem so different and shocking. But Brock University Associate Professor and Labour Studies Chair Kendra Coulter says Tiger King is more of a reflection of Canadian society than many think it is.

“It’s legal to own tigers in most of Canada,” she says. “And lions. And monkeys. Trade, consumption and possession of wild animals is not simply ‘over there’ or the domain of Joe Exotic.”

Coulter, an expert in animal welfare issues, says that while precise numbers are difficult to obtain, the best data suggests there are more than 1.5 million privately owned exotic animals in Canada, including more than 3,000 big cats. Continue reading →

It is with heavy hearts that we mark the passing of long-time friend of public medicare and sister activist, Shirley Douglas. Shirley passed Sunday morning from complications arising from pneumonia and is survived by her ex-husband Donald Sutherland and her children, Kiefer, Thomas and Rachel.

Like her father, Shirley Douglas spent her adult life fighting for health care for all and many other social justice causes

Shirley was an award-winning actress and the daughter of Tommy Douglas, widely known as the father of public medicare in Canada.  Shirley was a spokesperson for the Canadian and Toronto Health Coalitions and a champion of public health care. In her later years, Shirley helped by arranging for her son, Kiefer to do ads against for-profit private clinics, by speaking at public events, and by sending encouraging messages to Health Coalition events.

Natalie Mehra, the executive director of the Ontario Health Coalition, tweeted Kiefer Sutherland to express our heartfelt condolences over the loss of his mother: “Your mother was a great Canadian; fierce, stalwart, courageous, dynamic. Our hearts and thoughts are with you and your family today. In her honour we recommit to work our hardest to protect and improve equitable compassionate public health care for all.” Continue reading →

Well, guess who needs a ventilator now?

You may very well have heard the Breaking News by now that earlier this April 6^th, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, one of the closest examples of a Donald Trump cut-out on the world stage, has been moved to intensive care after first being diagnosed with COVID-19 several days ago.

We all wish the British prime minister well, yet it should be instructive to all of us, especially his mop-hair, ideological twin in the White House, that this virus plays no favourites.

Johnson and Trump, often looking and acting like they came out of the same peanut shell. Both have played a game chicken with the coronavirus. For Johnson, he is now tragically fighting for his life. For Trump, it may cost him his presidency.

It doesn’t care how much you try to deny it, downplay the death and destruction it can do, shoot the bull about miracle cures or going on with business as usual, or blame all the usual bogey men and women when all hell finally breaks loose. This virus is going to have the last word.

As former U.S. vice president and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said so aptly a month or two ago, and I paraphrase; ‘This virus doesn’t care about Donald Trump’s tweets.

More recently, former U.S. vice president Al Gore, now one of the world’s leading climate activists, said words to the effect of ‘you can’t gaslight a pandemic’. Continue reading →

I am about as far away as you can get from a monarchist.

And yet, I took a few moments out of my afternoon this April 5^th to listen to the address Queen Elizabeth II of England delivered to what is left of the United Kingdom in this 21^st Century, and I could not help but feel a little uplifted and assured that we work together and care for one another, we will prevail.

So many of what we all need at a time like this were there, in her words – strength, empathy, reassurance, a reminder that through history, humans have been through dark times like this before, and a will and resolve to find  more sunny days on the other side of this one.

“We’ll meet again,” were among her final words – a nod to lyrics of a morale boosting song sung by Vera Lynn for a people enduring the hellfire of the Second World War at home and abroad.

I wonder how many Americans now wish they had never overthrown the monarchy?

As I reflected on her message, I could not help but compare her composure and the grace of her words to the denial, misinformation and lies, and mad, dysfunctional, self-serving bile spewing from the mouth of the orange-hair monster on the U.S. side of the border – a man who occupies an office that his nation and the world would otherwise look to for strong and steady leadership at a perilous time like this.

Honest Abe Lincoln must be screaming in his grave right about now.

The late U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, a Republican whose name became synomimous with the party that has been circling the drain since Nixon and finished off by Trump, once said this during a time of great crisis, a Civil War that threatened to forever tear his country in two –

“I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts.”

Clearly, from his words and behaviour before and during this latest crisis, Trump would not have a clue what Lincoln meant by those words, and his country, Canada, and the rest of the world are in all the more danger for it.

I never thought the day would come that I would pray so much on the words of a monarch, but can we all please hear that message from Her Majesty, Queen of England, one more time?

Niagara, Ontario – According to Niagara Region Public Health, the latest count, as of this past Saturday, April 4^th at noon, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 or Coronavirus in this Niagara region has climbed to 123.

Out of these 123 reported cases, 26 individuals confirmed to have the virus have “recovered” or have been “resolved,” according to Niagara Region Public Health, and that is encouraging.

Quite tragically, at least seven people in Niagara, Ontario that health authorities know of have died.

Please keep in mind that the very first confirmed case of Coronavirus in Niagara, Ontario was reported barely more than three weeks ago on March 12^th, and the first death was reported barely more than a week ago, during the last full week of March.

That all means that the number of cases and the number of deaths related to Coronavirus in Niagara, Ontario are growing exponentially, meaning that the upward slope of the line of the graph – that line that doctors and nurses and other frontline health care workers are so desperately hoping to see flattened to keep from overwhelming our health care system – has been rising more steeply over the past three or four weeks. QUEEN’S PARK — Official Opposition NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said small and medium-sized businesses, charities and community-based non-profits need more help to make it through the COVID-19 storm, and the provincial government should offer that lifeline.

“Many small and medium-sized businesses, non-profits and charities are counting down the number of days they can keep their heads above water since COVID-19 has taken away their revenue,” said Horwath. “We not only want them to survive, we want them to be able to keep staff on the payroll as much as possible.

Thorold’s downtown has been making a strong comeback in recent years, thanks to community support and local business owners. Let’s not see downtowns like this fall.

“The federal wage subsidy program and loan options are a welcome relief, but still leave small operations unable to pay the rent and bills without sinking into debt. The provincial government can solve that problem.”

TORONTO – Today (Friday, April 3rd), the Ontario government released extensive COVID-19 modelling, revealing several scenarios that project the potential number of cases and deaths. In doing so, the province is providing the public with full transparency about the consequences should everyone but non-essential workers fail to stay home and practise physical distancing.

Montebello Park in St. Catharines, Niagara.. The City is now closing its parks and beaches to the public due to escalating health and safety concerns

St. Catharines/Niagara, Ontario — With the Province of Ontario ordering the closure of all outdoor recreational amenities, the City of St. Catharines will close all of its parks and beaches immediately.

The closure comes as the nation, province and City work in unison to slow the spread of COVID-19 by limiting social gatherings and practicing physical distancing. Closing the parks further limits the public spaces individuals can gather and possibly spread the virus.

We are getting in to weeks here of all of this “social distancing” and isolating ourselves at home, and some people seem to be going a bit stir crazy.

How about this for a match made in hell? Donald Trump and the Rev. Jerry Falwell, Jr., who has been all in on the self-described “stable genius’s” first take on COVID-19, that it was just like a “mild flu” that, like a “mircale,” will disappear in a matter of weeks.

They are busting to get out again and back to business as usual – if not so much in Canada, certainly down there south of the border in Trumpland where only a week ago the self-anointed “stable genius” himself declared swinging the doors of the country wide open again by Easter

Trump’s Easter resurrection was on until health experts on his own pandemic team made public their calculations that cases of COVID-19 across North America could spike by then and the number of deaths in the United States alone could, even if the whole country agrees to stay at home, surpass 100,000.

Yet that hasn’t stopped many of Trump’s most zealous sycophants and supporters from wanting to kick down their front doors and get going again. Continue reading →

Niagara, Ontario – Research labs across Brock University have emptied their supply rooms to help the people who are leading Niagara’s fight against COVID-19.

Thousands of gloves, hundreds of lab coats and goggles, and cartons of face masks were loaded into a truck on Tuesday, March 31, and sent to Niagara Health, who will distribute it to front-line health workers at the region’s hospitals.

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath and her party have continually been pressing for more assistance for more vulnerable people through this crisis.

I especially want to express my gratitude for all of those in my former profession who are still on the job. I can’t tell you how often medical workers are disrespected and verbally and even physically assaulted. (Statistics show even more than police!)

The City of St. Catharines wasted little time earlier this March closing down its playgrounds due to the coronavirus outbreak. Yellow tape is tied around the playground equipment.

TORONTO — In an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 and keep people home, the Government of Ontario has extended the Declaration of Emergency and associated emergency measures, including the closure of non-essential workplaces and restrictions on social gatherings.

In addition, Ontario is issuing a new emergency order under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act to close all outdoor recreational amenities, such as sports fields and playgrounds, effective immediately. These actions are based on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health.

Number of confirmed cases of Niagara residents with Coronavirus has more than doubled in two days

Niagara, Ontario – At 6:18 p.m. this March 30th, Niagara Health, the region’s amalgamated system of hospitals, reported Niagara’s second death from COVID-19 – the second death of a patient with the virus that the Niagara hospital system has reported here in the last six days.

The age and gender of the second person has not yet been disclosed, and Niagara At Large will provide updates when more information is available.

For the moment, here is the statement released this March 30th by Niagara Health –

“Niagara Health is saddened to report the second death late yesterday afternoon of a patient being treated at our St. Catharines Site for COVID-19. We would like to express our deepest condolences to the patient’s loved ones as they deal with this terrible loss. 

Niagara Health reminds the community of the seriousness of this pandemic and encourages everyone to follow the directions of regional, provincial and federal healthcare experts. You can help limit the spread of COVID-19 by staying home if you can, practicing physical distancing and washing your hands regularly.

Our team is working to its fullest capacity to maintain a quality and safe patient environment during these unprecedented times.”

The first coronavirus-related death in Niagara occurred on March 24th and was that of an 84-year-old man who resided at Grafton Gage Village, a retirement and long-term-care facility in St. Catharines. He reportedly was infested with the virus after coming into contact with a relative who had recently returned from a trip to Europe.

News of the second death in Niagara comes as Niagara Region’s acting Medical Health Officer Dr. Mustafa Hirji reported that the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Niagara, Ontario has jumped from 14 this past Saturday, March 28th, to 21 on Sunday, March 29th to 34 this Monday, March 30th.

When the first few cases in Niagara were confirmed earlier this March, they were all traced back to people who had travelled to other countries. According to Niagara Region’s Health Department, more than 20 of the 34 cases confirmed to date are related to travel outside the country.

Other confirmed cases are still being investigated for their origin, but Dr. Hirji warned at a recent meeting of Niagara’s regional council that it was “just a matter of time” before the region experiences cases transmitted from one person in the community to others.

That is all the more reason why everyone in Niagara should heed the warnings of health experts to stay at home as much as possible, to wash hands possible, and to practice social distancing by remaining at least six metres away from other persons when it is absolutely necessary to leave home to pick up food, pharmaceuticals and other essential items.

Shortly after Niagara Health circulated the news release about the second death, it followed up by sending out the following information –

“We understand the community’s concern with COVID-19 and its impact on the Niagara region. Beginning Monday, March 30, we will publicly report on the patient activity and testing taking place at Niagara Health related to COVID-19.

This data will be updated daily at 4 p.m.:  https://www.niagarahealth.on.ca/site/covid-19-case-reporting

We ask for your understanding with the reporting of patients who pass away. These updates will be made as soon as possible noting our priority is to first notify family and loved ones.’

Niagara Health reminds the community of the seriousness of this pandemic and encourages everyone to follow the directions of regional, provincial and federal healthcare experts. You can help limit the spread of COVID-19 by staying home if you can, practicing physical distancing and washing your hands regularly.”

Niagara At Large urges all of you to please take this pandemic seriously, and for the sake of yourselves, your family and friends, and everyone else in the community, take every precaution possible to isolate yourselves and to prevent contracting this killer virus.

Brock University’s Level 3 containment laboratory (CL3) has been approved by the Canadian government to be used for COVID-19 research.

Brock University’s research community is stepping up to contribute supplies, facilities and expertise to Canada’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brock has made available supplies of gloves, masks and chemicals to Niagara Public Health, and researchers are also discussing ways to use the University’s Level 3 containment laboratory (CL3).

The Canadian government has already approved Brock’s CL3 lab to be used for COVID-19 research.

Laura Ingraham, one of Trump’s most loyal voice boxes on Fox News, goes after other media organizations in February for allegedly over-reacting to the coronavirus outbreak

For millions of Donald Trump’s supporters in the United States and for far too many in Canada – yes, right here in Canada – who worship Trump and his antics, there are three major places, outside of Trump’s Twitter farts, that they go to for “news”.

The first two are Fox (aka ‘Trump TV’) and Rush Limbaugh’s rant radio, both of which made millage, for as long as they could, calling concerns and warnings being reported about the escalating COVID-19 pandemic a “hoax” and part of some  “deep state” or “left-wing conspiracy.”

And the third source with, believe it or not, one of the largest circulations of any print publication in North America, is The National Enquirer.

Since Trump fired out this Tweet in late February, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. has soared from about 60 to about 140,000 this March 29 – more recorded than in either Italy or China. The number of deaths, during the same period, has risen from zero to more than 2,400.

The National Enquirer is loaded with jaw-dropping, fictitious garbage at the best of time.

But take a look (immediately below) at the dangerous sewage it has printed on the front page of its latest issue, during a perilous time when getting information that is right and information that is wrong can make the difference between people staying safe and healthy, or getting sick and possibly even dying –

Can you believe that? And if you do, there probably isn’t much point reading on.

“Coronavirus Cure Finally Found.” That’s the headline splashed across the front of this disgusting tabloid.

One of the many current residents of Waverly Woods in Fort Erie/Niagara. Let’s help them save their home for all of us.

Niagara, Ontario – In these perilous times we are living through at the moment, it gives me a little joy to run the following good message from Marcie Jacklin, a resident of Fort Erie, Ontario and one of this Niagara region’s great conservationists.

Marcie is a leading member of a citizens group called Community Voices of Fort Erie which is continuing to fight a plan by a developer to build a residential complex in the Waverly Woods area near and along the shores of Lake Erie, and I am hopeful that with support from the rest of us, they will win.

As bad as what we are going through with this killer virus outbreak now, I am feeling optimistic that many of us – not all, but many of us, including more of our politicians and people in the business and development community – will come out the other side of this terrible ordeal with a different perspective about nature and about what really matters the most.

A Message to the developer. We don’t want this here where the nature is so rich and diverse, and so wonderful to experience. Time has run out for this.  Put it somewhere else.

If we think about what really matters in this world, and we enough of us work at it, I think we can join arms, and more of our politicians will join arms with us, in convincing developers that a treasured woods, or meadow or wetlands, is no longer a place where we can pour more pavement.

Let’s make a pledge right now, while we’ve got lots of time at home to give what matters serious thought. to work together to do it.

We can and must save this place and others like it for our future and the future of our kids.

This scientifically based evidence underlines the importance of preserving our natural spaces in order to maintain the health of our community.  These areas are fast disappearing from our landscape, with the amount of development currently underway.  Please be sure to let your politicians know that a healthy community needs green spaces in order to thrive.

TORONTO — Today (this March 28^th), Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced new penalties to combat price gouging and hold offenders accountable for raising prices significantly on the necessary goods Ontarians need to protect themselves and their families from COVID-19.

Effective immediately, the government has issued an emergency order that retail businesses and individuals in Ontario cannot charge unfair prices for necessary goods.

Individual offenders can face a ticket of $750, or, if summoned to court and convicted, could face a maximum penalty of a $100,000 fine and one year in jail. As the City, residents and businesses continue to pull together to curb the spread of COVID-19, further measures are being enacted to limit any possible transmission of the virus.

Unfortunately, for the safety and health of everyone, places like this, in this case a playground in the St. Catharines community of Port Dalhousie,  are off limits for a while.

Effective immediately City playground equipment will be closed to the public. The City had already posted signage on equipment warning that playgrounds are not sanitized and pose a transmission risk. Since Buffalo area Congressman Brian Higgins issued the following protest against this hair-brain idea late yesterday afternoon, the Trump administration has at least temporarily “spiked” the plan.

Yet given the demons that are so obviously occupying space inside Trump’s head, and his penchant for looking for outside “enemies” to blame for his failings, we can’t be surprised if this idea makes a comeback.

Vigilance is a necessity when it comes to this highly irascible character.

As seen here, Trump has already militarized the Mexican border to stop what he has called any “infestation” or “invasion” from there. He has now toyed with the idea of doing it along a Canadian b border that has been friendly to generations of people sharing it.

Like so many other proud Canadians out there, I took a few minutes away from the yeoman’s job our CBC is doing of keeping us informed during these perilous times to check in to what is being reported on all of this south of the border.

So this Thursday (March 26^th) morning, I tuned in to ‘Morning Joe’, a program broadcast  on weekdays on the American cable network MSNBC.

One of the items that the co-hosts of the program, Mika Brezinski, daughter of former President Jimmy Carter’s national security advisor Zbigniew Brezinskik, and Joe Scarborough, a lawyer and former Republican Congressman from Florida, who quit the Republic Party after Trump was elected president, showcased on this morning was a TV ad, titled “Exponential Threat” and produced by a group of progressive-minded American citizens called Priorities USA.

The ad, making use of Trump’s own words, cuts so much to the core of this reckless monster’s lack of honest, responsible leadership in the face of what is a global pandemic that could kill millions, that Trump’s campaign is now threatening the licences of television stations that play it if they don’t take it off the air

“I would just love to have the country opened up and just raring to go by Easter (this coming April 12th),” Trump told his partners  in manufacturing “alternative facts” at Fox News this March 24th. “So, I think Easter Sunday, and you’ll have packed churches all over our country. I think it would be a beautiful time. And it’s just about the timeline that I think is right.”

All Trump wants is another Easter like this again. Who is that dressed up in the bunny suit, Mike Pence or Donald Jr.?

All I can say from this Canadian’s perspective is this; Thank God the Canada/U.S. border is closed to everyone and everything but essential crossings now.

Poor Trump. He hasn’t played golf for days now or held one of those zany rallies for weeks. And all of this talk from infectious disease experts that this coronavirus many be around for months is really starting to bum the self-described “stable genius” out. So time to open the country again – just in time for Easter!

The last thing that anyone on this side of the border who is being responsible and staying home and practicing social distancing to contain the spread this killer virus needs right now is millions of Americans – and unfortunately, there are millions of them – who believe this nut bar so much they would follow him to the gates of hell crossing the border and further spreading the coronavirus here.

In a news briefing New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo held before Trump made these insane remarks about relaxing the stay home rules and opening the country back up by Easter so it can get back to business, Cuomo rightfully said of anyone not practising social distancing; “It’s insensitive, it’s arrogant, it’s self-destructive, it’s disrespectful and it has to stop now. This is not a joke, and I am not kidding.”

Cuomo might just as well have been talking about the reality TV show con man who not so long ago was calling a coronavirus that was already killing people in other parts of the world a “hoax” before comparing it to a “mild flu,” then saying “a miracle” may flush it away.

Apparently one of his most zealous supporters, the evangelical nut Jerry Falwell Jr. – a self-proclaimed “good Christian” who, like fellow tent-rival con artist Pat Robertson, famously blamed feminists, gays and pro-choice activists for the 9/11 terrorist attacks – is already summoning tens of thousands of young students and their teachers to return right now to his Liberty University campus in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Hey, Reverend Falwell, how about holding your classes on that ill-fated cruise ship, the ‘Grand Princess’, instead? Apparently the last of its coronavirus victims are about to disembark, and we can push you and your fellow Trumpies far enough out to sea that we won’t have to include you in the COVID-19 case count. The president would like that. Better for the stock market.

And here is the best part. When out are out there, there is less of a chance of infecting the rest of us. And maybe Trump can come out and do a rally.

But getting back to Easter, the New York Daily News, a tabloid in the Big Apple area that has done some excellent front page features on Trump in the past, published a fabulous front page this March 25th that just about says it all.

As I was wrapping up this rant on the state of leadership at the federal level in the United States, a Niagara At Large reader, Joe Gibbons, r sent a comment to a previous post on our online news and commentary site that reads as follows; “Toilet tissue with Trump’s face on every sheet is available from Amazon. Unfortunately Amazon is not shipping this great product to Canada.”

I saw some of this Trump toilet paper in a store I visited on Cape Cod, Massachusetts last fall and it was selling like hot cakes then.  A cashier in the store told me they could hardly keep it in.

Just imagine how well toilet paper with Trump’s face on it would sell now – especially when toilet paper is in such short supply with people hoarding the stuff. At this point, I bet even some of those characters who pop on those red hats and line up for Trump’s rallies would use it.

Enough of the toilet talks though.

Let me sign off on a higher plane with a few words of wisdom from Leonardo da Vinci that may be worth giving a little thought to right now, especially across the border – “Blinding ignorance does mislead us. O! Wretched mortals, open your eyes!”

The following statement, from Niagara Health President Lynn Guerriero came in just before 7 p.m. this March 24^th and, I must admit, my fingers are shaking a little as I key in these words.

This is all of the information we have about this death so far, but all of our hearts should go out to members of this person’s family and to those who loved and cared about this person.

A Brief Update from Niagara At Large – Since this news was posted March 24th, Niagara At Large has learned that the person who died was an 84-year-old resident of Grafton Gage Village, a retirement and long-term care home in St. Catharines/Niagara.

The person was admitted to hospital more than a week ago where a test confirmed that he had the coronavirus. He had apparently been infected by a relative wh had recently been in Europe.

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario – Today (this March 23^rd), in consultation with the Town’s Emergency Control Group (ECG) and with the support of her Town Council colleagues, Lord Mayor Betty Disero declared a state of emergency to further protect Niagara-on-the-Lake from the potential spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act S. 4(1) states –

Not that I don’t take it  seriously, but I may not have  been freaking out over the Coronavirus outbreak as much as I think some people have.

Yet one of the more frightening pieces of news I read in one of our local newspapers over the past week or so is that in all of Niagara, Ontario, at least as of March 19^th date the article was posted, there are on enough hospital beds to handle “about 54 severe cases of COVID-19” at any one time.

Think about that my fellow Niagara citizens.

In a region with a population of more than 440,000 residents, we only have (as of only a few days ago, at least) enough hospital beds in Niagara for slightly more than 50 people who may come down with a severe case of this potentially fatal virus. Continue reading →

Access to Regional facilities will be limited to necessary interactions, including deliveries, and Regional Council and committee meetings.

Was it really just a month or so ago that kids were walking along the sidewalks, on their way back and forth to school, or that we could greet friends with a hug or a shake of a hand?

Yes, we were hearing news about this mysterious virus infecting people and tragically killing some, but that was happening somewhere oceans away, on the other side of the world. We were still working at our jobs, attending social gatherings and shopping at our favourite stores.

Now, as if the sunlight in our lives has faded within a few minutes, this killer virus has arrived at our doorstep, and there are no more hugs and handshakes, there is one restriction after another on our travel, and most everything and every place we like to do or go has been cancelled or shut down.

Yet, as disappointing and disturbing and frightening as it all is, we have to promise each other that we are not going to let it defeat our resolve to survive and come out of this stronger than we were before. Continue reading →
