QUEEN’S PARK – NDP MPP Jennie Stevens (St. Catharines), Shadow Solicitor General, released a statement following news reports about the Ford government altering Ontario’s building code to allow triple-bunking in jails:

“Triple bunking is not a solution to overcrowding. Putting three people into cells that were never designed for that capacity raises serious concerns about staff safety, the spread of infectious diseases, and the conditions people are being held in.

“Most people serving sentences in provincial jails will be back in our communities in less than two years, so what happens inside these institutions matters outside their walls too.

“We already see a revolving door between homelessness, mental health and addictions, our streets and the correctional system. Overcrowding jails without addressing the root causes risks making the cycle worse.

“We should be investing in supportive housing, treatment and community supports that are safer, more humane, and often far less costly than repeatedly cycling people through jail.”
