Doug Ford Fails Parents And Students In Niagara, Once Again

Are Niagara’s grade school students and their parents, along with teachers and support workers ready to unlock the gates and board the school bus?

Niagara Falls, Ontario  – Doug Ford’s half-baked plan to reopen schools is nothing short of a catastrophe for parents, students, and teachers.

The plan falls short of even the basic standards set out by SickKids and blatantly ignores recommendations from school boards, teachers, education workers, healthcare associations, and parents.

“Parents in Niagara have been waiting anxiously for a plan to reopen schools safely – Doug Ford gave them one written on the back of a napkin,” said Steven Del Duca, Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party. “None of the concerns parents raised have been addressed. None.”

Doug Ford’s school reopening plan gets a failing grade on every measure.

The SickKids’ report, released last week, makes it clear that a proper plan must include smaller class sizes and a significant amount of new caretakers (custodians and cleaning staff).

Steven Del Duca and the Ontario Liberal Party took this advice seriously and, in consultation with experts in health care and education, released their Plan to Help Our Students <https://ontarioliberal.ca/steven-del-ducas-students-in-schools-action-plan/> last week.

To reopen safely, the Liberal plan would fund 300 new classrooms in Niagara, which are necessary to allow for physical distancing. Under Doug Ford’s Conservatives, there will be no new spaces at all.

The Liberal plan would also support 510 new teaching positions in Niagara to help keep class sizes small. Doug Ford’s plan only supports 10.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced plans to re-open the province’s school at a high school in Whitby, Ontario on July 31st

To keep classes and schools clean, the Liberal plan would also create 310 new caretaker positions in Niagara. The Conservatives will only create 26.

That’s about one for every six schools.

“This plan continues to make it clear that Doug Ford is treating our students, their parents and everyone involved in the public education system as an afterthought,” said Steven Del Duca.

“What Doug Ford gave us isn’t a plan to safely reopen schools – what he gave us was irresponsible. It doesn’t provide the smaller class sizes we need or enough resources to keep schools clean. It’s a dangerous roll of the dice with our kids’ safety.”

  1. Picture of Premier walking the school hallway cuts out Minister of Education walking beside him.
There should be a minimum of 1M between people – not 1M between desks. 1M between desks causes students and school staff to be less than 1M apart. In grades JK to 4 there is no need to wear masks – INVITATION to SPREAD THE VIRUS!
