“The Ford government wants to take more power into its own hands to decide which projects will get an environmental assessment, and which ones will not.”
A Message from the Green Party of Ontario

Our team at Queen’s Park was shocked to read the Conservatives’ _COVID-19 Economic Recovery Act – Bill 197.
Doug Ford’s recovery plan includes almost nothing for the people most hurt by COVID-19. No changes to long-term care. No plan for education. No help for small businesses.
Instead, the recovery plan takes another hammer to the places we love.
Defend Environmental Laws
The biggest change is to Ontario’s Environmental Assessment process, which looks at impacts of a proposed project on our air, water and land before giving it the green light.
The Ford government wants to take more power into its own hands to decide which projects will get an environmental assessment, and which ones will not.
We need a fair process that gives every big project the scrutiny it deserves. But the Minister wants even more power to pick and choose which projects get to skip the environmental assessment.
It will mean decisions can be driven by politics rather than science.
Imagine if a fossil fuel proposal got an exemption because the Premier didn’t want to talk about climate change.
Imagine if a highway expansion got an exemption without looking at the damage to wildlife.
This is another ford power grab. Bill 197 could make environmental assessments the exception rather than the rule. It gives way too much authority to a government that cannot be trusted to protect our environment.
Help us say no to Bill 197.
