Queen’s Park, Toronto  – Kathleen Wynne’s final budget is a disappointing, last-ditch pitch for votes – with the details failing to live up to her vote-grabbing hype.

“It’s clear that Kathleen Wynne believes it’s more important for her to look good than for people to feel good,” said NDP Leader Andrea Horwath. “This is why people are disappointed. This is why people are cynical about politics. And this is why Ontarians are looking forward to electing a new premier in June.

“It’s time to replace that cynicism with hope – with a premier that will deliver better health care, and a more affordable life for everyone.” Continue reading

Ontario NDP’s ‘Dental Care for All’ Plan is a Great Idea With One Very Important Cautionary Note

Costs of Dental Care in Ontario Have Got to be Brought Under Control!

Flying Monkeys Were A No Show at Latest Niagara Regional Council Meeting

The scary monkeys were kept at bay and whatever regional government equivalent of a wicked witch might unleash them – this time, at least – just melted away.

There might have been what some regional council observers have taken to calling another “s— show” in the council chambers where, oddly enough, signs are now posted on the walls warning visiting members of the public not to engage in “aggressive or intimidating behaviour.” Continue reading

Ontario’s New Democrat’s  NDP Will Lower Auto Insurance Rates By At Least 15 Per Cent – NDP Leader Andrea Horwath

“An NDP government will deliver the 15 per cent savings the Liberals refused to deliver.”

A News Release from the Office of Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath

Posted March 23rd, 2018 on Niagara At Large

North York, Ontario  – At a town hall on auto insurance this past Thursday, March 22nd, Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath announced that an NDP government will lower auto insurance rates by at least 15 per cent and ban the practice of neighborhood discrimination in the setting of auto insurance premiums.

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath

“An NDP government will deliver the 15 per cent savings the Liberals refused to deliver,” said Horwath, referring to a promise Kathleen Wynne broke right after the election. “And we won’t allow your postal code to determine how much you pay.

“Families are feeling the squeeze in Ontario. Costs are going up, and paycheques aren’t. Making life more affordable is critical in making sure everyone can build their best life, right here in Ontario.”

NDP candidate for the riding of Humber River – Black Creek Tom Rakocevic said that his neighborhood and others across Ontario have been unfairly targeted by discriminatory practices in the insurance system.

“Folks here in Humber River – Black Creek and nearby communities like Brampton are paying higher auto insurance rates than other Ontario communities for no good reason,” Rakocevic said.

“It hurts people — but it doesn’t have to be this way. I’m so inspired by Andrea’s commitment to make sure  people don’t have to settle for high prices. She’s such a contrast to the discrimination and broken Liberal promises Kathleen Wynne delivered on auto insurance rates.”

New Democrats have been fighting to bring down auto insurance bills for over five years. But during Wynne’s time in office, auto insurance bills climbed higher and higher.

“As premier, I will stand up to the insurance companies,” said Horwath. “We will curb insurance company profit and improve government oversight of the auto insurance industry. And when I say I will lower rates by at least 15 per cent, I mean it.

“People know where I stand, before and after an election. Not with insurance companies — with everyday families that have car insurance payments, hydro bills and prescription costs piling up. They need relief, and I’m going to make sure they get it.”

Horwath and the NDP have a plan to lower hydro bills by 30 per cent, and keep them down by returning Hydro One to public hands.

She has also promised drug and dental coverage for all Ontarians through her plans Pharmacare for Everyone and Dental Care for Everyone.

Could the Flying Monkeys Be Very Far Behind?

A News Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter and publisher Doug Draper

Posted March 21st, 2018 on Niagara At Large

First, let me start by giving you some good news.

Spring is finally here and here’s the most important thing. There are only 213 days left until this coming October’s municipal elections.

This coming October’s municipal elections are our chance to draw the curtains on this circus.

Yes, I know, at least some of you are probably saying that another 213 days is like a century with the kind of characters we have on Niagara’s regional council, not to mention on more than a few of our local councils in this region.

My response to that is go out and enjoy the spring and summer, and by  all means get informed and engaged in what is going on in municipal politics in this region. And lo and behold,, that glorious date of October 21st, when we can go to the polls and show all those characters (less the good ones on our councils, because there are some good ones) who the real boss is will come soon enough.

In the meantime, here’s the bad news. Continue reading

Stronger Firearms Legislation to Make Communities Safer – Canada’s Federal Government

Ontario’s NDP Leader Announces First Of A Kind ‘Dental Care for Everyone Plan’

Every Ontarian Will Access Dental Benefits Either Through Workplace Benefits Or Their Health Card

“Every three minutes in Ontario, someone visits a doctor’s office or emergency room to get care for a dental problem,” said Horwath. “No one in Ontario should have to live in pain, or deal with the lifelong damage of going without dental care. No one should have to rack up credit card bills just to get the dental care they need for themselves – or for their kids.”                                      – Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath

Former Beatles Drummer Finally Gets A Full Measure Of The Respect He Deserves

The Madness of King Donald!

If Trump gets angry and desperate enough, would he do or say something that triggers a nuclear war?

“The mind boggles. Who knows what a mad king will do when no adults remain to supervise him.”- Robert Reich, former U.S. Labour Secretary during the Clinton administration

“North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!” – a January 2nd, 2018 tweet from the man in the White House, Donald Trump

By Robert Reich, from Robert Reich’s Facebook Page

Trump is moving into a new and more dangerous phase.

Before, he was constrained by a few “adults” – Rex Tillerson, Gary Cohn, H.R. McMaster, and John Kelly – whom he appointed because he thought they had some expertise he lacked.

Now he’s either fired or is in the process of removing the adults. He’s replacing them with a Star Wars cantina of toadies and sycophants who will reflect back at him his own glorious view of himself, and help sell it on TV.

Narcissists are dangerous because they think only about themselves. Megalomaniacs are dangerous because they think only about their power and invincibility. A narcissistic megalomaniac who’s unconstrained – and who’s also president of the United States – is about as dangerous as they come. Continue reading

Ontario Government’s Throne Speech Announces Major Investments Guided by a Commitment to Care and Creating Opportunity

Government’s Plan Will Take Bold Action to Enhance Health Care, Home Care, Mental Health and Child Care

A Media Release from the Office of the Premier

Posted March 19th, 2018 on Niagara At Large

A Note from Niagara At Large – The following Media Release from Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s office will be followed below by critical statements on the Wynne Liberal government’s Throne Speech, also released this March 19th  by the Province’s NDP Leader Andrea Horwath and by recently elected PC Leader Doug Ford.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne

The Ontario government is investing more in the care and services that people across the province rely on, easing the mounting pressures families are facing and giving them every opportunity to care for their loved ones and get ahead.

The government’s upcoming Budget will focus on doing more for people in health care, home care, mental health care and child care services. It will also expand a number of other programs that support people to care for their loved ones and help them to succeed in a changing economy.

Ontario’s economy remains strong, with the unemployment rate at its lowest in almost two decades. Yet between the rising cost of living and stable, long-term jobs becoming harder to find, many people are struggling to take care of themselves and their families. Continue reading

Come Hear An “Epic Story” About A Successful Battle To Save Farmland In Ontario

Can We, The People,  Still Win Battles To Save What Are Left of Our Green Places Right Here In Niagara?

An Invite to All from the Preservation of Agricultural Lands Society in Niagara, Ontario

Posted March 19th, 2018 on Niagara At Large

The Preservation of Agricultural Lands Society  (PALS) invites the public to hear an epic story of  farmland preservation in Pickering, from  Mary Delaney, Chair of the Land Over Landings Group in Pickering , at its 42nd Annual General Meeting on Thursday March 22nd ,7 p.m. Unitarian Congregation Hall 223 Church Street St. Catharines .

As Mary  notes , “Almost half a century ago the Federal Government expropriated 18,600 acres of prime farmland next to Toronto for an airport — an airport that was never built.”

“On that day the longest continuous protest movement in the history of Canada was born, as the citizens of Pickering rose up to fight for their own government for their farms and communities.”

“Three and half years later People or Planes successfully forced the government to shelve the airport — but the Land was never returned, zoned forever, it would seem, for an airport and development. Over the next decades the roller coaster campaign continued as POP evolved into Land Over Landings in the new century.”

With a powerful power point featuring archival images, Mary Delaney, Chair of Land Over Landings, will bring this alternately tragic and inspiring story to the public at PALS’ AGM, sharing these grassroots advocates’ tremendous successes, and their exciting vision for a future on the Lands.

A Brief Footnote from Niagara At Large publisher Doug DraperWe in Niagara who want to do whatever we can as citizens to save what is left of our agricultural lands and other green spaces, like the Thundering Waters Forest in Niagara Falls (just as one example), could likely get a lot of inspiration and good tips on what to do from listing to what Mary Delaney of Land Over Landings has to say.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day – Even To Those Of Us Who Are Only Irish For The Day

With a few words of wisdom from people of                 Irish descent

Posted this St. Patrick’s Day – Saturday, March 17th – by Niagara At Large publisher Doug Draper

Let’s celebrate this St. Patrick’s Day weekend with a few good quotations for these sometimes strange and dark times –

“Those who are animated by hope can perform what would seem impossibilities to those who are under the depressing influence of fear.”author Maria Edgeworth, 1804.

“Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation.”the late U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy during an address to the University of Capetown, South Africa, 1966.

And finally, a message that makes a great deal of sense in these mad Trumpian times from the late American comedian and cultural critic George Carlin, who in one of his stand-up routines, once described himself as a person who “used to be Irish Catholic.”

Ontario’s NDP is the Real Choice for an ‘Improved Work Life’ for people across the Province

‘Ontario  NDP Leader Andrea Horwath committed to a $15 minimum wage in April 2016 – well before the Province’s Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne did. A Statement from Welland (Niagara Centre) Riding Riding MPP and Ontario NDP labour critic Cindy Forster

Welland (Niagara Centre) Riding MPP Cindy Forster

“Today (March 15th) the Liberal minister of labour (Kevin Flynn) admitted what Ontario families have known for a long time – that the Wynne Liberals didn’t move fast enough to reform outdated labour laws.

Mr. Flynn’s admission … is proof that the Wynne Liberals knew that raising the minimum wage was the right thing to do, but that they waited until election time to do it, anyway – leaving families to struggle because the Wynne Liberals were prioritizing their own political interests.

No wonder families are feeling cynical. Ontario families are sick of this kind of nonsense. Continue reading

Ontario Opposition Parties Slam Premier for Abruptly Shutting Down Legislative Session

Ontario Premier Kathleen’s decision to make like former Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper and use the some medieval tool called prorogation to suddenly shut down the legislature this March 15th offers people out here one more reason to boot her out of the province’s top job this spring.

Already in competition with Donald Trump for some of the lowest public approval ratings of any elected leader on the continent, Wynne probably couldn’t do much more outside of recording herself drowning kittens and posting it on Facebook to make herself more disliked with enough Ontario voters to bury her in a landslide. A Citizen Cries Out For The Nature And History Of Fort Erie’s Waverly Beach To Be Spared From ‘Unwise’ Development

The Fort Erie lakefront has been sold to private buyers for a century. To continue this sell out is shameful!’

A Commentary by Fort Erie, Ontario resident Linda McKellar

Niagara, Ontario – Last year, the Town of Fort Erie accepted the Comprehensive Waterfront Strategy Plan done by consultants acting for the town and paid for with our taxes.

One of many members of the wildlife community that people cross paths with during hikes through Fort Erie’s Waverly Beach area

The two priority properties identified for public securement in the Strategy Plan were Waverly Beach and Bay Beach – the ONLY two places where public access is more than just a road allowance between miles of private property.

The Fort Erie lakefront has been sold to private buyers for a century. To continue this sell out is shameful! It is very unfortunate that the Town of Fort Erie did not acquire this land. Parklands actually increase property values.

Locals and visitors have family, friends and memories of the Waverly Beach area, some pay taxes to the town and all come to this lovely, serene place to walk their dogs, relax, be in nature and talk to friends and strangers. Continue reading

This coming October’s municipal elections are our chance to draw the curtains on this circus.

(An Introductory Message from Niagara At Large reporter & publisher Doug Draper – We are posting the information below for the second time in a week because the positive change in the makeup of individuals sitting on our local and regional councils that this dedicated group of citizens in our region – working under the banner, A Better Niagara –  is now campaigning for is important to the future of all of us who make Niagara our workplace and our home.

One wonders who this sign, recently posted inside the Niagara regional council chambers, is meant for – the public or the more errant members of the regional council?

So I urge everyone out there – ALL OF US – to move beyond just getting upset and angry over what we read and hear, almost daily now, about the bad conduct and the bad decisions that too many of our local and regional councillors have been force feeding us over the past three years because we don’t have to take it.

I urge you to  get involved with this citizens group in working for positive change and a better future for ourselves and for our friends and relatives and neighbours in this coming October’s municipal elections.

These coming municipal elections are possibly the most important ones that have been held in Niagara in decades, given what is at stake.

These elections present us with nothing less than our  big chance to remind our municipal politicians who they are supposed to be working for and to make things right for the future of this region and for all of us who live and work in it.

Don’t let this chance to make a difference slip by.

Exercise your rights as a citizen in a democracy that so many of our forefathers and mothers sacrificed for.

Get engaged – NOW!)

So here is some important news from the citizens working for       A Better Niagara –

Candidate training sessions planned in three more communities

Niagara, Ontario – Across Niagara it’s clear — people want to see some new faces around the regional and local council tables following the upcoming October 22nd municipal elections.

“While each Niagara community has had its own unique, concerning issues over the past term, the commonality is a demand for better governance,” said Sean Polden, executive director, A Better Niagara, a grassroots-citizens’ coalition formed to increase civic engagement. “People have had enough of controversies and infighting. They want to see regional and local governments listening to, and working for, the people.” Continue reading

A News Release from the Government of Ontario

Employment in Ontario increased by 15,700 jobs in February and the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.5 per cent.

According to the recently released 2017-18 Third Quarter Finances, the government is projecting to deliver on its commitment to balance the budget this year while making investments in the programs and services people and families rely on most.

Ontario’s economy has shown steady growth. In fact, since 2014 Ontario’s economy has grown more than Canada’s and all of the other G7 countries, but the government knows that more must be done to ensure that the benefits of a growing economy are shared fairly across the province. Continue reading
