Across Ontario, The Work Begins Now To Stop Any Damage Ford Might Do

“We must do what our electoral system failed to, make sure Ontario’s government represents the will of the people.”

A Message from the Broadbent Institute, Dedicated to Upholding the Principles of Canada’s Former NDP Leader Ed Broadbent

Posted June 14th, 2018 on Niagara At Large

Doug Ford’s PC win this past June 7th in Ontario proves the major fault in our electoral system.

Canada’s former federal NDP leader Ed Broadbent

Ontario will now be faced with a government set on an ultra-conservative agenda to cut services, freeze minimum wages, attack women’s right to choose, and ignore climate change – even though 58% of voters chose a decidedly different course of action.

This would never have happened with Proportional Representation.

Andrea Horwath and the NDP ran a principled and positive campaign. As a result, Ontario elected 40 strong NDP MPPs who will be a formidable force as Ontario’s official Opposition.

Democracy stretches beyond the ballot box.

That 58% who want a more progressive future for Ontario have an even more critical role to play now.

We must do what our electoral system failed to, make sure Ontario’s government represents the will of the people.

We do that by continuing to build our movement from the ground up, making sure those who most need to be heard are at the centre of our plans, and using every tool we have to stop the damage Ford intends.

Let’s get to work!

  1. Linda McKellar.

Those who oppose the change to a representative system use the excuse that the public will be represented by people for whom they didn’t vote. Well, 58% didn’t vote for Ford.
