St. Catharines, Ontario – With just two days left until Ontario voters hit the ballot box and Doug Ford’s Conservatives still refusing to disclose specifics about their $6 billion in promised cross-the-board cuts, Ontario NDP St. Catharines candidate, Jennie Stevens, said that the St. Catharines and Niagara regions would see a devastating 4, 076 jobs lost if Ford delivers on his promises.

“Our healthcare system is already bursting at the seams because of the Wynne Liberals’ cuts and budget freezes,” Stevens said.

“What our community needs is leadership that’ll invest in public services and that will stop shortchanging hospitals the way that twenty consecutive years of Liberal and Conservative governments have. We can’t afford more cuts, our hospitals can’t afford more claw backs and our community certainly can’t afford more job losses.”

Stevens stood outside of the St. Catharine’s hospital alongside outgoing Welland MPP, Cindy Forster, who spent years advocating for stopping the Liberal’s planned closure of the nearby Welland Hospital at Queen’s Park.

“For years, we’ve had patients treated in hallways because there aren’t enough beds, we’ve had elderly people rushed to hospital by ambulance only to be forced to wait – in some cases – over 24 hours – in uncomfortable chairs in emergency room hallways. It’s not right.” Stevens said. “As someone who spent years on the front line staff of Hotel Dieu Shaver, the only people who suffer from devastating cuts like this are patients and the staff who are forced to do so much with so little.”

“We are three days away from voting day and since Doug Ford hasn’t told us what his promises will cost, we’ve done his homework for him and these job losses are proof – his promises will devastate our region.”

“This election, St. Catharines communities no longer need to choose between bad and worse – they can choose leadership that puts them at the heart of government. Leadership that invests in hospitals. Leadership that promotes jobs, that makes life more affordable and that ensures everyone – regardless of age or income – has access to the dental care they need.”

“St. Catharines can choose change for the better.”

Andrea Horwath and the NDP’s plan asks the very richest people and richest corporations to pay a little more to help make Ontario more livable and more affordable for everyone. Her platform commits to:

  • Ending hallway medicine
  • Fixing seniors care
  • Lowering hydro bills by 30 per cent
  • Creating thousands of student co-op jobs and internships
  • Providing drug and dental coverage for everyone

  1. Linda McKellar

We need to elect people like Cindy and Jennie who actually broke a nail working in the system as opposed to lawyers and bean counters.

  2. Well, how did they plan to pay for all the freebies-and declare Ontario a sanctuary province for anyone to stop in for freebies?

So much fun to spend other peoples’ money!
