City of St. Catharines Celebrates New Neighbourhood Park Thanks to Wise Guys Charity Fund

A News Release from the City of St. Catharines

Posted June 1st, 2018 on Niagara At Large

There’s a new neighbourhood park in south St. Catharines thanks to a partnership between the City and the Wise Guys Charity Fund.

Doug Smith, chair of the Wise Guys Charity Fund, Mayor Walter Sendzik, members of City Council and the Wise Guys kicked off June is Recreation and Parks Month by celebrating the new Wise Guys Park, located across from the Welland Canals Fallen Workers Memorial where Wilfrid Laurier Crescent meets Welland Canals Parkway.

The Wise Guys Charity Fund contributed $25,000 towards the new park.

“We are very excited about the official opening of Wise Guys Park,” said Smith. “Our mission is to raise awareness and financial support for local causes in Niagara, while improving the quality of life in our community. This new facility tangibly enhances this community and, more specifically, improves the lives of its youngest citizens.”

The new neighbourhood park features new playground equipment with inclusive elements such as a large adaptive swing seat. The new playground equipment also features markers that will unlock interactive games and activities when scanned with Apple and Android devices families can enjoy together.

Wise Guys Park also builds on the City’s work creating a city where everyone can play with accessible pathways making it easier to get around the park.

“Our City parks serve as neighbourhood hubs for residents to get together and help promote healthy, active lifestyles for our children,” said Mayor Walter Sendzik. “I’m excited for the families in the neighbourhood to use the new Wise Guys Park and playground here, making new memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you to the Wise Guys for this generous contribution to the neighbourhood.”

The City’s neighbourhood parks are an important part of what makes St. Catharines a great place to live. Wise Guys Park is one of several neighbourhood parks that are getting upgrades this year.

Across the city, families in the area of Roehampton Park are also enjoying recent upgrades to the park including new, inclusive playground equipment, swings and an improved multi-use court with basketball nets.

The City has also upgraded the multi-use court and basketball nets at East Port Park and will open a new splash pad at Bogart Street Park later this spring.
