Thaniks to Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff is now the province’s Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness Minister.
So just when we need someone who can stand up to Trump’s threats to our farmers in Ontario and who can work to build a build a food-growing system in this province that serves us all, even as our food-growing lands face more and more severe weather, Premier Doug Ford has picked Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff to be our province’s new Agriculture Minister.
The home-schooled, 29-year-old Oosterhoff’s appointment to this portfolio comes at a time when farmers are struggling with the costs of dealing with severe weather that has been doing countless millions of dollars of dollars of damage to orchards, vineyards and other crops in and around the Niagara region alone.
It also comes at a time when Trump’s tariff war is placng serious strains on our province’s food industry and on people showing up at the grocery store.
Is Oosterhoff, whose family does have a background in farming, the best choice to run Ontario’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness at a time when members of the province’s agriculture community are struggling as much as many Ontario residents who are having a harder and harder time affording to pay their grocery bills?
For better or worse, we are all about to find out.
On a final note, Oosterhoff, who has been a strong supporter of reducing elected representation at the municipal level, is now a member of the largest cabinet in Ontario history. A total of 40 politicians, including Premier Doug Ford, now sit on the cabinet, but for some reason that seems to be okay.
