Canada Must Take Strong Stand Against Trumps’s “Barbaric Treatment” of Migrant Children

This is horrible – will you pitch in to help us put the Liberals on notice?

Like (so many of) you, I have been simply horrified at the news coming out of the US this week regarding the barbaric treatment of migrant children. It’s too horrible to believe. But it’s all too real. And the callous attitude of the Trump administration demands a strong and principled response from Canada’s government.

With an estimated 48 children a day being ripped from their parents and herded, alone, into detention centres often in baking heat in the desert, the urgency could not be clearer.

Thus far, the non-action from Justin Trudeau and the federal Liberals in the face of this human rights tragedy is deeply disturbing. We can’t let this go on!

When the NDP stood in the House of Commons this week to denounce Trump’s policies and demand that Canada rescind the Safe Third Country Agreement with the U.S., Justin Trudeau responded by saying that it would be “playing politics” for him to condemn the forcible separation of migrant children from their parents at the Mexico-U.S. border.

It’s not “playing politics” to stand up for human rights.

The Safe Third Country Agreement holds that both Canada and the U.S are “safe” countries for those seeking asylum. Clearly, the U.S. no longer meets this standard.
Many refugee advocates including Amnesty International Canada and the Canadian Council for Refugees have called on Canada to respond to the ongoing inhumane treatment of asylum seekers in the U.S. by rescinding the Safe Third Country Agreement.

This detention of children in the U.S. is only the latest illustration of Trump’s indifference to human rights. This week the U.S. withdrew from the United Nations Human Rights Council. And previously, Donald Trump signed an executive order banning travelers from 7 Muslim-majority nations.

Canada needs to stand up for what’s right, and that includes rescinding the Safe Third Country Agreement with the U.S.

As New Democrats we stand up for the weakest amongst us. Right now, we’ve got a principled leader in Jagmeet Singh who’s willing to take Justin Trudeau’s Liberals to task for their lack of action.

A special thanks to everyone who’s already stepped up recently with a donation to help. However, I think it’s high time the rest of us all pitched in to help the team at NDP HQ and in our caucus put this Liberal government on notice! New Democrats will always fight for human rights!

Enough is enough. Too much is at stake. Let’s get going!
