Niagara, Ontario – In anticipation of those 18 and older eligible to book a COVID-19 vaccination starting tomorrow, Tuesday, May 18, new clinic dates have now been added into the provincial booking system for Niagara for June 1-5 at MacBain Community Centre in Niagara Falls.

Niagara, Ontario – On Thursday Premier Doug Ford announced an extension to the Stay-at-Home order until at least June 2. The extension is needed to provide additional time to control the spread of COVID-19, bring down case counts, take pressure off already overburdened hospitals and put more vaccines in arms.

While we are supportive of the decision to further extend protective measures for the betterment of our communities, the lack of any kind of detailed plans to lead us towards an opening up of the economy is frustrating.

We believe our residents and businesses need to see a clearly developed re-opening plan that is evidence-based and includes the positive impacts of vaccinations. With more than half of Ontarians vaccinated with at least one dose, increased shipments of vaccines on the way, and age eligibility expanding in the next few weeks – Ontario should have a clearly defined re-opening plan. Ontario Long-Term Care Minster Dr. Merrilee Fullteron insists she inherited a mess on long-term care from previous governments – so, as she continues insist, cut her some slack. It takes years to take action.

TORONTO — The Ontario government is investing $35 million to increase enrollment in nursing education programs in publicly-assisted colleges and universities across the province.

The new spaces will be available for Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 cohorts and will introduce approximately 1,130 new practical nurses and 870 registered nurses into the health care system.

COVID-19 has exacerbated the gap between the current supply of nurses compared to Ontario’s current and future needs across the health care system.

Today’s (May 14^th, 2021) announcement is a significant step towards keeping pace with the rising demand for frontline health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, especially in sectors where health care workers care for Ontario’s most vulnerable patients such as long-term care, home and community care and acute care. Province Outlines Plans to Make Pfizer Vaccine Available to Youth Aged 12 to 17

TORONTO, Ontario  — With the new, more contagious variants continuing to pose significant risks, the Ontario government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, has extended the Stay-at-Home Order (O. Reg. 265/21) until at least June 2, 2021.

All public health and workplace safety measures under the provincewide emergency brake will also remain in effect. During this time, the government will prepare to administer the Pfizer vaccine to youth between the ages of 12 and 17, beginning the week May 31, 2021, as the province also finalizes plans to gradually and safely re-open the province.

  Green Bin use is up six months after launch of new collection contract

Niagara, Ontario – Last October, Niagara Region moved to every-other-week garbage collection for  residents and businesses while continuing to provide weekly collection of Green  Bin, Blue Box and Grey Box materials.

Based on the early results, Niagara residents are responding well as Green Bin tonnage is up more than 34 per cent and garbage tonnage is down almost 16 per cent. Recycling tonnages have also increased by almost 12 per cent since the new collection changes came into place.

The results were part of an update given to Niagara Region’s Public Works Committee on May11, 2021 for the first six months of the new contract comparing tonnages versus the same period last year. Continue reading →

This vaccine, along with Pfizer, was approved for use based on tests that involved the second dose being taken within one month. Now politicians like Doug Ford are stretching it out to four months – just to get at least one shot in people’s arms.

Niagara, Ontario – The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) is pleased to announce the purchase of 70 acres on Morgan’s Point Road in Wainfleet, Ontario.

The property is designated as an Environmental Conservation Area and Significant Woodland, serving as a vital habitat and migratory stopover for birds, bats, and butterflies.

Area in yellow show new lands purchased by Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority  near shores of Lake Erie in Wainfleet, Niagara. Lands outlined in red pinpoint two other conservation areas owned by NPCA – the Lakewood Conservation Area to the left and Morgan’s Point Conservation Area along Lake Erie at the tip of Morgan’s Point.

The new land purchase includes several important ecological features, such as interior forest which provides critical habitat for interior species, a significant water recharge area, a highly vulnerable groundwater area found throughout the entire parcel, and a potential alvar ecosystem with characteristic shallow soils.

This sign has been prominent at protest gatherings in Niagara and other regions in Ontario

At least three times since this past April 10th, when reportedly more than 1,000 people participated in an anti-Covid 19 lockdown in St. Catharines, there has been that rally, another in Niagara Falls and the latest one this past May 1^st at a cenotaph in St. Catharines for honouring those who served Canada during times of war.

All of the gatherings involved people milling together, mostly without masks, and chanting or cheering speakers who referred to the pandemic as a hoax, the stay-at-home or lockdown orders as assaults on their constitutional rights, and to vaccines as some form of “bio-warfare.” Some adult participants took their children to the gatherings. In some videos, infants in strollers can be seen.

Following the first rally, police issued charges and summons to at least a handful of participants, including West Lincoln Mayor and Niagara Regional Councillor David Bylsma (who was later called on the carpet by other members of the Region’s council) and veteran Thorold City Councillor Jim Handley. QUEEN’S PARK – The minister of long-term care needs to take responsibility for failing seniors, said MPP Jeff Burch (Niagara Centre).  The Ford government must take action now to protect them, Burch said during question period this Wednesday, May 5th.

Burch shared the stories of two local families whose mothers have suffered at Royal Rose Place, a for-profit long-term care home in Welland.

“Over the course of five months, a constituent from Welland saw her mother’s health deteriorate. She had two ulcers, constant urinary tract infections, and was left in soiled diapers for hours. Complaint after complaint to the ministry went unaddressed until her mother passed just a few weeks ago,” said Burch.

“We were overdue for a pandemic,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s long-term care minister Merrilee Fullerton during a 20-minute news conference this May 3rd, and “I’m one person.”

How can she cope?  She’s just one person. And while we are discussing her limitations, let’s not leave incompetent and morally bankrupt out.

This verbal vomit from yet another one of Doug Ford’s boot-licking cabinet ministers followed in the wake of what could hardly be a more damning report, released late this past Friday, April 30th by an independent Ontario Commission on Long-Term Care during the COVID-19 crisis that was in session for about a year and heard from literally hundreds of loved ones of residents in these homes, front-line staff in the homes and others.

Among other things this report, which we will provide a link to at the bottom of this post), concluded that long-term care homes across Ontario were left woefully unprepared for this pandemic due to budget and regulation cuts that stem back through a number of governments, including the former Mike Harris Conservatives, and Dalton Mutiny/Kathleen Wynne for many years. In the Thorold neighbourhood where I live, one homeowner has erected a sign in front of their yard that reads; “No More Lockdowns.”

A first glance at the sign has me saying; “Okay. Who wants more lockdowns? I can’t think of anyone who is not waiting for the day when can all go back to something that resembles a normal life again.”

I have a young daughter who, like so many of her 20-somethng and 30-something friends, was concerned enough about finding steady, decent-paying work before this pandemic started. So who doesn’t want to see an end of lockdowns and stay-at-home orders for them?

But that is not what those leading and supporting the so-called ‘No More Lockdowns Canada’ movement is about. Continue reading →

That’s the conclusion of Environmental Defence’s new report: Paving Paradise: The Impact of Highway 413 on Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Air Pollution and Sprawl [https://d36rd3gki5z3d3.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Highway-413-Paving-Paradise-Report_Environmental-Defence.pdf]

Environmental Defence teamed up with Eunomia Research & Consulting to calculate that the vehicles using Highway 413 will add up to 700,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually, leading to a cumulative total of 17.4 million tonnes of emissions by 2050, assuming today’s vehicle mix remains unchanged. There isn’t much else we can do these days but look out the windows of our homes at a world that is more than a bit risky right now with more infectious variants of VOVID-19 floating around.

And if you looked out of your window the last couple of nights, or walked out on your yard, if you have one, up there is the sky was a super moon, unusually large looking in size because it is orbiting closer to our earth than usual.

I went out shortly before 6 a.m. this Wednesday April 28^th to try to get one last picture of the super moon before it fell below the western horizon. As usual, my pictures of the moon and other bodies way out their beyond our planet never work out so well with the camera I have.

That didn’t stop me from humming the music of one of my favourite Tragically Hip songs, ‘Morning Moon’, which you can listen to here by clicking on the screen below.-

And the death toll in Ontario just keeps on climbing.

In the last three weeks, Ontario’s coroners have seen 25 people in South/Central Ontario who died suddenly at home as a result of COVID-19, some in their 20s and 30s, before they ever got to the hospital for care.

Like many of you, our hearts went out to the family upon reading the devastating account of young Emily Viegas, a 13-year-old who tragically died at home in bed of COVID-19 on Thursday.

Her mom, who has COVID, is hospitalized at Brampton Civic Hospital and her father who works in a warehouse in Brampton, feared Emily would be separated from both her parents and sent to a different hospital, kept her home thinking that she was young and would recover. Continue reading →

Anyone who may have watched the live coverage this past April 22^nd of Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s news conference – zoomed to us from the backyard of his late mother’s home because he is under quarantine due to exposure to a member of his staff tested who tested positive for COVID-19 – might have been struck by his tearful emotion as he apologized for some failures in the way his government has been addressing the COVID plague.

When it comes to getting a needle, I am probably as much of a chicken as everyone else.

I was diagnosed with hay fever when I was a kid, and found myself having to get hay fever needles – at first every week, then monthly – for the next two or three years of my young life, which seemed like an eternity then.

I played minor league baseball at the time, and the injections would cause my arm to swell up with so much pain, that I could barely play a game.

So the thought of having to have a needle in the arm again, this past Friday, April 23^rd, to guard against COVID-19, kept me up most of the night before, with un-fond memories of those hay fever needles in mind.

Then my wife Mary and I went to the MacBain Community Centre in Niagara Falls this past Friday, April 23^rd, and we both held out a bare arm and received a shot of Moderna. Continue reading →

Tree cutting at the historic Randwood Estate property in Niagara-on-the-Lake three years ago infuriated many town citizens and paved the way to legal action.

SORE is pleased to report on a decision last week of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice of relevance to both the Rand Estate and to heritage protection in NOTL

Hummell Properties, owned by a well- known local developer, had brought an application to quash an interim control by-law enacted by your elected Council in December of 2018, at its first meeting following the most recent municipal election. Hummel claimed bad faith and illegality by the Town in enacting the by-law. The application was heard over two days in St. Catherines last week.

The decision was issued the very next day by Mr. Justice Ramsay, who was clearly unimpressed by application. He made quick work of the allegation of illegality, dismissing it in one paragraph and then characterized the applicant’s evidence on bad faith as “contrived”.

One of a number of rallies, held by SORE and its supporters over the past five or six years, in support of preserving the historic Rand Estate in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario as a heritage site for now and future generations.

His Honour held as follows with respect to the bad faith argument:

“I think that council wanted to preserve the old town’s heritage and that it considered the matter urgent.  They wanted to fulfil the mandate that they thought they had been given by the public. They froze the status quo, considered studies and public input, amended the Official Plan and then repealed the interim control by-law. Niagara Regional Councillor and West Lincoln Mayor David Bylsma under the gun again for his recent participation in an anti-lockdown rally in St. Catharines/Niagara

Niagara Region’s Council has decided to take one of its members participation in a recent anti-lockdown rally to its integrity commission for a probe into a possible violation of the Region’s code of conduct rules.

The Regional Council member under the gun is David Bylsma, who also serves as West Lincoln’s mayor, and the rally he played a prominent role in involved several hundred Niagara area residents, most of them not wearing masks, gathering in St. Catharines on April 10th to protest recent COVID-19 stay-at-home and lockdown rules in place across the province.

Bylsma’s involvement in the rally, which included him leading the gathering in a chant of ‘stop the lockdowns’, received widespread criticism. It also drew statements of disapproval from St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik and Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley. Continue reading →

I was proud to know her and cover her many campaigns for a healthier world in our Great Lakes region. She was a relentless, courageous warrior for Mother Earth.

Every time we need a powerful voice in the room to give those who plunder our green places the hell they rightfully deserve, I miss her badly.

She received Order of Canada recognition for her efforts and she was, as some of our American friends in the environmental movement came to call her, ‘the lady of the lakes’.

One of the buttons from the very first Earth Day in April of 1970.

This Thursday, April 22^nd marks the 51^st anniversary of countless many around the world holding ‘environmental teach-ins’, rallies, tree-plantings, among a host of events, in observance of the first-ever Earth Day.

A wide-eyed high school kid back then, I joined a group of my school mates in staging a demonstration in front of what was then one of the most polluting industrial plants in my hometown of Welland.

We were out there in front of the plant, receiving a mixture of people waving support and shouting at us to go back to school and shut up, and we weathered it all – filled with hope that if enough people got engaged in the fight to protect our natural environment, we would, by now, be living in a far healthier world. Buffalo area Congressman Biran Higgins speaks up for our shared Great Lakes

Buffalo, New York  – As the country recognizes Earth Day, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) is pushing for the federal government to take action to protect the planet by increasing its investment in the Great Lakes, the largest source of fresh water in the world.

Higgins, a member of the bipartisan Great Lakes Task Force, and other members are asking budget appropriators to fund the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) for fiscal year 2022 at $375 million, a $45 million increase over FY2021 funding levels.

Higgins said, “Historically polluted waterways, like the Buffalo River, caused by years of toxic dumping inspired a public movement for change leading to the first Earth Day in 1970, and passage of the Clean Water and Clean Air Acts a short time later. We have come a long way in the last 50 years but there is still work ahead of us to cleanup, restore and protect our water. Mr. Jeff Burch: Vaccines are the light at the end of a very long tunnel, but in my community in Niagara, the vaccine rollout has been rife with confusion due to the actions of this government.

We still have no answers on the diverted shipment of 5,000 Moderna vaccines away from Niagara. I’ve heard from countless constituents from all age groups who were told conflicting information for the provincial booking portal, and had difficulty booking their appointments.

The province earmarked selected areas for priority access to COVID-19 vaccines, but people across the province were confused when some of the areas with higher case numbers were not selected. Continue reading →

Coalition of environmental, labour, health, faith groups call on Canada to increase its climate ambition

Today (this April 21^st, 2021) , the day before world leaders come together at the Leaders Climate Summit hosted by President Joe Biden, a coalition of groups came together to call on Canada’s federal government to increase the ambition of its actions to combat climate change.

The organizations are highlighting that doing our fair share on climate action is not only Canada’s responsibility, but within our reach, with strong regulations, increased investment and a commitment to justice.

It’s almost the last week of April, for God’s sake. The daffodils and tulips are out. Garden Centres in our area have been getting ready to bring in geraniums and other plants for spring planting.

And yet here we are, a little more than a week away from the first day of May, and in a matter of a few hours we have winter wonderland out there.

Is Mother Nature trying, once again, to tell us something?

Ontario NDP MPP Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath want’s Ford Longterm-Care Home Minister’s head.

QUEEN’S PARK, Toronto — For months Doug Ford and his PC MPPs have been refusing the paid sick days plan called for by countless experts and workers alongside Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP.

But with indications growing that the government won’t be able to hold out much longer, Horwath scheduled the Opposition Day motion Wednesday afternoon to be a debate on a safety plan for essential workplaces that includes paid sick days.

But as of Wednesday morning, the Ford government is throwing up as many blockades as possible to prevent the regularly-scheduled Opposition Day Motion from going ahead. A Very Brief One by Doug Draper

As just one, going back to my grade school days,  who has studied the ugly, violent conduct people of colour in North America have had to put up with for centuries now,  at least a  little bit of glory, glory and Thank God has to go out to the news late this afternoon of April 20th  that a jury in the U.S. State of Minnesota came out of deliberations.

It came out   and declared that a monster in a cop suit, who betrayed anything that has to do with the sworn duty of police in the United States and Canada to serve and protect, and  who destroyed the life of George Floyd, guilty of murder on all three counts.

To all of us out there, who still believe in the dream, here is a little bit of Amazing Grace.

Here is to Martin Luther King’s  dream of reaching the mountain top and seeing the other side, to a more just and peaceful day when we can all live together, regardless of the colour of skin, or our religious or sexual orientations.

*Looking back at 2020*

When we look back at the last 13 months, we have to acknowledge some of our losses.

At last count, over 375 Niagara residents have died as a result of COVID-19. These individuals were a part of our community – they were our neighbours, our friends, and our family members. It can be easy to get lost in the cold statistics of this pandemic, but we have to remember that real people have lost their lives.

We also have to remember that the pandemic also had a significant impact on our collective mental health. Feelings of isolation, anxiety and depression are all too common as we live through yet another round of lockdowns.

We have also learned that this pandemic has not impacted everyone equally.

Women have been more greatly affected, with the majority of frontline positions being occupied by females. At the same time, the coronavirus has driven women out of the labour market as they shoulder the majority of childcare responsibilities – in fact, a recent RBC economic report noted women’s participation in the workforce is now at 55 per cent, the lowest rate since the 1980s. When we talk about recovery, we must keep these facts in mind and work to build a more equitable economy. Continue reading →

Niagara, Ontario – Well here we go again.

Just  one week after they got off the clown buses to rally call COVID-19 a “hoax” and rally against vaccines as “biological warfare” and calling mask-wearing “bullshit,” hundreds of them were in Niagara Falls, Ontario this weekend, using city lands and Niagara Parks lands near the Horseshoe Falls, to peddle this dangerous, Trumpie, Qanon garbage again.

In St. Catharines last week, on Saturday, April 10^th to be precise, close to a thousand or more of these self-anointed soldiers for our liberties and freedoms rallied together in chants of “Freedom” and “No More Lockdowns,” and calls that wearing a mask is “bullshit” and taking a vaccine to protect ourselves again a pandemic that has destroyed way too many lives here and around the world is akin to “biological warfare.”

So here we are this weekend of April 17^th and 18^th, when our dumb-ass of an Ontario premier had to finally walk a little bit back on his order to police that they should be able to pull any of us over our cares, arbitrarily, for going out for groceries, and hundreds of these Covidiots are at it again.

Doug Ford and Donald Trump are interchangeable as populist politicians, Martin Regg Cohn writes.

How good it is to know that the Niagara Regional Police, along with a number of other police forces across Ontario, is lining up against Ontario Premier Doug Ford and his Conservative government’s draconian order – issues this April 16th – to have police arbitrarily pull virtually any of us over if we even go out on the road to a grocery store.
