A Brief Footnote from Niagara At Large reporter and publisher Doug Draper –

A look at one of many provincially significant wetlands in Thundering Waters Forest – an area now targetted for development by a China-based corporation. File photo by Lori Monroe
In 2016, when members of the former, disgraced Niagara Regional chair Al Caslin’s cabal dominated key board and administrative positions at the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, a highly controversial and scientifically dubious scheme was pushed to blow away provincially significant wetlands in the Thundering Waters Forest in Niagara Falls, Ontario – at a location inside a Niagara River watershed that remains an international “area of concern” in our Great Lakes – for one of Niagara Falls city council’s pet development projects, and grow new wetlands somewhere else.
This self-serving plan, dressed up as “bio-diversity offsetting, was ultimately scrapped here in the wake of strong public opposition, and also due to effective counter-arguments put forward by experts like Owen Bjorgan.
You can watch a video he produced in 2016, making the case against this bogus proposal, by clicking on the screen below –
Keep in mind, however, that plans supported by Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati and a majority on his city council to allow urban development by a China-based corporation to move forward in the Thundering Waters Forest are still on the books.
The fight to save Thundering Waters Forest is far from over and may be lost if enough members of the public don’t stand up and say ‘NO’!
