Niagara, Ontario — Niagara Centre Member of Parliament Vance Badawey says Canada’s new federal budget puts Canada on the path to recovery and provides the country with a level of support that will ensure we weather the worst of the economic impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The entire country has learned a valuable lesson during this crisis; that childcare is a vital component in the lives of a large number of Canadians. And no one feels the effects when it’s lacking more than women in the workforce.
“At a time when employment has been uncertain, when we could not rely upon our schools to stay open, the lack of support for childcare has hamstrung the efforts of working moms and dads to return to work and some sense of normalcy.
“Today (this April 20th, 2021), we’re taking a first step down a path towards ensuring anyone who works can do so and continue to contribute to our economic recovery.
“Our infrastructure will serve as a catalyst for jumpstarting Canada’s economic engine. It’s an investment in Canada that will pay dividends in this country for decades. Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, We will build back better with supports aligned to the needs of the workers youth, seniors, businesses and families of today and by ensuring our digital and concrete infrastructure are up to the challenges of a post-pandemic world.
“We’ve recognized better employment insurance makes all of us stronger, as does a higher minimum wage, support for young people, investments in mental health services and a commitment to help our seniors get through these difficult times, including an increase in OAS and strong investments in long-term care.
“We will continue supporting sectors of our economy especially hard-hit by the pandemic such as our domestic wineries, grape growers, and our tourism sector.
“Today we also reconfirmed for Canadians that their federal government will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them throughout the remainder of this pandemic.
“We’re recommitted to providing wage and rent subsidies for families, individuals and our business community because we understand they need our support during these unprecedented times and we all benefit when no one goes hungry, when families don’t lose their homes, and when businesses are able to reopen their doors once we’ve put this disease behind us.
“Let’s get shovels in the ground and build a better Canada.”
