‘Big Oil’s obscene profits keep growing while the costs of climate disasters are shouldered by the rest of us.’
A News Release from the public interest group Canadians for Tax Fairness
Posted July 18th, 2026 on Niagara At Large
Dozens of wildfires are raging across Canada, destroying communities, forcing families from their homes, and blanketing cities like Toronto with some of the worst air quality in the world.
Meanwhile, as Canadians choke on wildfire smoke and face skyrocketing costs, Big Oil keeps cashing in.
If you’ve followed our work recently, you know Canada’s largest fossil fuel companies are majority foreign-owned —and 60% owned by Americans. If current trends continue, Big Oil and its U.S. investors are on track to collect as much as $90 billion in windfall profits by the end of 2026.
That means ordinary Canadians are paying twice: first through sky-high prices, and then through the devastating consequences of the climate crisis.
Canadians know this isn’t right. Polling released last month found that 66% of Canadians support a tax on oil and gas windfall profits.
A windfall profits tax could raise an estimated $46 billion to:
- – Offer relief for Canadians facing soaring energy and food prices
- – Invest in clean, affordable energy
- – Strengthen wildfire prevention, emergency response, and climate resilience so communities are better protected from the next disaster
Every day we delay, Big Oil’s obscene profits keep growing while the costs of climate disasters are shouldered by the rest of us.
That’s why I’m asking you to act today. [Tell Ottawa to cut costs, fight climate change, and tax Big Oil’s windfall profits now!](https://www.taxfairness.ca/civicrm/mailing/url?u=8566&qid=2770431)

For the last eight years the people of Ontario have been listening to Doug Ford give excuses for one thing or another. The Greenbelt, healthcare, the giant ferris wheel, the plane and now the fires. It seems he has a song, and it ain’t got no melody ……….. he has a story and it ain’t got no moral, and finally he has a dance and it ain’t got no steps. He is constantly running in circles. There was a number one song back in the 70’s that sums up Ford and his BS. Take a listen and you will see what I mean. ………………………………………..https://www.bing.com/search?FORM=SNAPST&q=Billy+Preston+Will+It+Go+Round+In+Circles%20Lyrics&filters=sid:%22afefad53-fbba-a014-ea96-f145a4a9470a%22+aid:%222D704
