A Statement from Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley on Pride Month

Every June, we mark Pride Month across many parts of the world. While this time is often a cause for celebration in our community, it is also a time to reflect on the importance of equality, human rights, and the work that remains to eliminate discrimination in our society.

This term of council has taken strides to make Niagara a more welcoming and inclusive community. In addition to joining the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities, we have also made investments by hiring our first Manager of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to ensure our policies and practices are working  for everyone.

We also recently finalized the membership for a advisory committee dedicated to the issue of inclusion, ensuring that we hear from a diverse range of voices across our region.

As part of recognizing Pride Month, I joined Regional Council’s advisory committee appointees, Councillors Darte and Ip, in raising the Pride Flag at Regional Headquarters. While the flag will fly for the entire month to June, it is currently at half-mast to honour the recently discovered residential school victims.

While it is important to recognize June as Pride Month, it is equally as important to accept and include members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community throughout the entire year. As Regional Chair, I will continue to advocate for equality as I stand in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
