Thanks To Trump And His Millions Of Supporters, Any Friendship We Had With The United States Is Over!

“They (Canadians) need us to survive,” declared a puffed up Donald Trump shortly after he announced plans this week to hit Canada with even more punishing tariffs on a broad number of goods Canadian businesses sell to the United States.
“Without the United States,” tough-guy Trump continued, “there is no way they (Canadians) can survive.”
With that kind of schoolyard bully manner of talk, along with all of Trump’s previously threats to make Canada a “51st state,” aimed at a country that long considered the U.S. a friendly, reliable neighbour, I think we Canadians need to double down on our determination to make a go of it without Trump and the tens-of-millions of Americans he represents, and do our best to build a stronger bond with Europe and other regions around the world.
Those who study fascist leaders know that part of their playbook for steering their subjects’ attention away from their own faults and misdeeds is to invent both internal and external enemies that they can attack in one way or another.
And for some reason, Trump and his followers have chosen to make an enemy out of Canada, even down to threatening our country with even more tariffs for the smoke from our wildfires that has drifted down in to the United States – this even though Ontario and our federal government has, in recent years, sent .convoys of hydro trucks to southern U.S. states to help restore power for people after severe wind and ice storms and has flown water bombers down to help put out wildfires there.
Within reason, we have never hesitated to help our American friends and neighbours and this is the thanks we get.
I know (and I have said it before in commentaries on Niagara At Large) that there are many Americans who don’t go along with this B.S. that Canada is an enemy, and in fact the ones I know who fall into that category have gone out of their way to apologies to me and my fellow Canadians for the sorry state of affairs we are all experiencing now.
But there comes a time when saying; “I’m sorry” is not enough because things have become so bad that we have no choice but to sue for a divorce.
That’s why I support, and we should all support our Prime Minister Mark Carney’s ongoing efforts to build stronger trading relationships with as many other countries around the world as we can so that we are no longer dependent on the United States.
In the meantime, I can’t believe I am saying this because on so many levels I have no use for Ontario Premier Doug Ford, I agree with the statement Ford made at a Canadian premiers’ summit in Prince Edward Island this July 21st that “we need to stand up to the bully” and hit him back, dollar for dollar and as hard as we can, with a boycott on travel and buying U.S. products, and with as many taxes on our exports to the United States as possible.
I also agree with what appear to be a growing number of Canadians that we should forget about negotiating a new North American Free Trade Deal between our country, the United States and Mexico, and confine those negotiations to a trade deal with Mexico.
If it wasn’t clear before, it should be clear to every Canadian by now, that the good relationship we once had with the United States is over!
