Marineland Has Begun Moving Its Last 30 Beluga Whales To Aquariums In Out-Of-Country Locations

Two of the 30 surviving beluga whales  held in captivity at the now-shuttered Marineland amusement park in Niagara Falls, Ontario are now in the process of being moved to parks in the United States and Spain.

After many months of hand-wringing over the fate of 30 remaining beluga whales and four dolphins at the defunct Marineland amusement park in Niagara Falls, park operators have begun the delicate process of transporting them to marine parks in the United States and Spain, according to newly released reports.

The move draws an end to efforts by animal advocacy groups across Canada to have the whales re-located to a marine mammal sanctuary which is still under construction off the shores of Nova Scotia.

But on the positive side, the whales and dolphins will at least not be euthanized, which was the threat Marineland representatives first made last year after claiming that they could no longer afford to look after them after so many years of exploiting them for profit.

This move also hopefully draws the curtain on parks like this holding whales and other marine mammals, including dolphins and walruses in Canada. It is shameful that our federal and provincial governments allowed the capture and confinement of great animals like this in the first place.

It is also shameful that so many people paid money over the past more than decades to view these amazing animals for their amusement.

Let’s hope we never see another park like Marineland in Canada again.

More on this issue later.
