Canada Should Not Be First Place In Pipelines, Wildfires, And Smoke

We Should Be Going For Gold In Renewables, Emergency Preparedness, And Protecting Nature

A Message from the Green Party of Canada

Posted July 20th, 2026 on Niagara At Large

Toronto and Niagara Falls this past week when the air quality from smoke drifting in was at its worst

First place doesn’t always mean you win.

Toronto (and the Niagara area) had the dubious honour of having the highest air quality index in the world last Wednesday, July, 15th, 2026. In other words, it had the worst, most polluted air.

This isn’t the kind of ‘award’ communities want. But global temperatures are continuing to rise as humans burn fossil fuels. And the risk of dangerous smoke and wildfires is rising along with it.

That is, unless we take action now.

While northern Ontario burns and Toronto chokes, Danielle Smith, Doug Ford, and Mark Carney are pushing for more pipelines and fossil fuels. The Green Party needs your help to push back.

Rampaging blazes in northern Ontario sent smoke careening to Toronto. This mix of toxic chemicals and fine particles triggered air quality warnings, sent people sheltering inside, and even hospitalized some residents.

The Federal Liberals and the ruling parties of Alberta and Ontario seem fine with this as long as fossil fuels keep flowing. But smoky, dark orange skies and air that’s dangerous to breathe aren’t things we can just accept.

At the Green Party, we have real, practical solutions, for now and for the future.

We’ve been fighting for a National Civil Defense Corps to respond when disasters hit, more funding for emergency relief, and stronger protections for workers during periods of smoke or extreme heat.

And we’re the voice for the environment in Canadian politics. We know that a Canada that’s first in clean renewable energy, pollution reduction, and protecting nature, is a Canada that is more affordable, healthy and secure.

  • With gratitude, hope and determination,  Green Party of Canada
