Ford’s “Government for the People” Chops Funding for Niagara Area’s Cancer-Screening Bus

Ontario NDP slams Ford’s cut to cancer-screening bus as short-sighted

“This is such a small investment to make when there’s so much at stake: Detecting cancer early can literally mean the difference between life and death.”                                                                           – Niagara Centre NDP MPP Jeff Burch.

NIAGARA, Ontario — Jeff Burch, NDP MPP for Niagara Centre, slammed Doug Ford’s decision to pull the plug on a mobile unit that helps residents of Hamilton, Burlington and Niagara access cancer screening as a short-sighted move that could cost people their lives.

Ford Government goes after cancer screening too.

The Mobile Cancer Screening Coach is due to be parked in April after Ford ripped away its provincial funding, The Hamilton Spectator reports. The bus provides mammograms, pap tests and colon screening kits, serving the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network at a cost of $634,689 a year.

“This is such a small investment to make when there’s so much at stake: Detecting cancer early can literally mean the difference between life and death,” said Burch. “No one should be forced to face a worse prognosis because they face barriers to accessing health services.

“If this cut is allowed to stand, it will disproportionately hurt women and marginalized groups, including low-income families.”

The Hamilton Spectator’s Code Red project found screening was a factor in the comparatively high rate of cancer deaths in low-income communities.

The cut to provincial funding for the Mobile Screening Coach comes as Ford attacks other services that keep Ontario families healthy and safe. Ford is also slashing the number of public health units across the province and attempted to rip away some of their funding before making a temporary retreat.

“Instead of ending hallway medicine, Doug Ford is making things so much worse with cuts to services that help improve health outcomes,” said Burch. “Cutting the cancer-screening bus today will mean higher costs in the future, as fewer people are screened and diagnosed early and enter the health-care system sicker and with greater needs.

“Residents of Hamilton, Burlington and Niagara deserve so much better than to have their Mobile Cancer Screening Coach taken away. We should be investing in health care services, not cutting early intervention programs that help save lives.”

A Brief Afterword from Niagara At Large reporter and publisher Doug Draper –

Of all of the cuts Doug Ford’s so-called “Government for the People” have made to programs that are of particular importance to people on lower incomes, including seniors, students, and many struggling families in between, this one has to rank among the most despicable.

Are the upper five per cent that got their big tax cuts from this Ford government happy now? What about all of the everyday people across this province who voted for Ford? Have they had enough cuts yet or do they want more?

And this is the Ontario Tory Party that, among its ranks, has members like Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff who proudly declares that he is “right to life.” I am sure I am far from the only one here who knows people who are alive today because of cancer screening.

Well where does the right to life party come in here? Maybe Mr. Oosterhoff can tell us.

Do we really have to put up with three more years of this heartless government? Imagine how much worse it will be if Ford’s pal, Andrew Scheer, gets elected prime minister in this October’s federal election.

One response to “Ford’s “Government for the People” Chops Funding for Niagara Area’s Cancer-Screening Bus

  1. All of Ford’s cuts purportedly to “realize cost efficiencies” are inexplicable. illogical and indefensible. He has blatantly attacked the most vulnerable human sectors of society as well as all the environmental controls aimed at preservation and conservation. We, collectively, point the finger at Trump and deplore what he has done and continues to do with impunity. Look at Ontario under Ford and see a microcosm of the US, it’s a mirror image! Ford panders to his wealthy enablers hidden in the background – as does Trump. People need to wake up – probably like waking up with a start from a bad nightmare. Ford, Kenney, Scheer (Harper) and Trump are all cut from the same cloth. Will enough people wake up in time to stop all of Canada reflecting the worst possible future facing us if we allow it to continue? I sincerely hope so.
