Niagara Region, Ontario – An Inter-municipal Transit Working Group led by the Mayors and CAOs from St. Catharines, Welland and Niagara Falls with support from the Regional Chair and Niagara Region CAO have been working in cooperation to find a sustainable model for inter-municipal transit service in Niagara.
The results of their work were presented in the Niagara Transit Service Delivery and Governance Strategy report. Major elements of this strategy call for the formation of a consolidated transit system and service enhancements. St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland councils have unanimously agreed to move forward with the next steps in the inter-municipal transit process and have asked Niagara Region to become an official transit provider and partner.
At a Special Council meeting on March 23, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. recommendations will be brought forward to Regional Council on the future of inter-municipal transit services including recommendations on the Region’s involvement as a transit provider and recommendations on the Region’s involvement with the next steps in the inter-municipal transit process.
In January of this year Regional Council approved the extension of our current inter-municipal transit service, Niagara Region Transit. This extension allows for the time needed to make decisions on the recommendations presented in the Niagara Transit Service Delivery and Governance Strategy towards a permanent inter-municipal transit service.
