Ontario NDP Leader Promises Big Cuts To Emergency Room Waiting Times

News from the Campaign Office of Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath

Toronto, Ontario, May 20th, 2014 – Andrea Horwath, Leader of Ontario’s New Democrats, says after ten years of Liberal government patients with complex needs still spend more than 10 hours in ERs to get care they need. The New Democrat Leader says it’s time to focus on the fundamentals and laid out her goal of cutting ER waits by half.

“Families waiting for hours in an ER are tired of seeing health dollars spent on CEO pay hikes and the multi-million dollars scandal at ORNGE. It’s time to focus on fundamentals to improve health care,” said Horwath. “Our plan provides targeted investments that will make sure ER beds are available for ER patients and they can be seen quickly and effectively. It’s a plan that makes sense.”

An NDP government will cut ER wait times in half by hiring 250 new nurse-practitioners, opening 50 new 24-hour family health clinics, creating 1,400 more long-term care beds, and implementing a 5 day home care guarantee. These steps will keep ERs moving and make sure that Ontarians are getting the right care they need, when and where they need it, to reduce pressure on ERs.

“The Liberals have had ten years to fix ER wait times, but they haven’t delivered for families. The NDP plan will put patients first,” said Horwath.

St. Catharines Riding NDP Candidate Lends Voice To Same Issue

From the Campaign Office of St. Catharinees NDP candidate Jennie Stevens

Jennie Stevens, NDP candidate for St. Catharines, says families whose loved ones are languishing in ERs will welcome the NDP’s plan to cut wait times in half.

“People needing complex care are spending 5 hours more in St. Catharines General’s ER than the provincial average—that’s plenty of time for them to think about how their tax dollars were spent on CEO pay hikes and the multi-million dollar ORNGE scandal,” said Stevens. “It’s time to focus on fundamentals, so people get the care they need when they need it.”

The NDP plan to hire new Nurse Practitioners, open new 24-hour family health clinics, create more long-term care beds, and implement a 5-day home care guarantee will reduce pressure on ERs and reduce anxiety for those seeking care.

“The Liberals have had ten years to fix hospital wait times; the NDP has a plan. Targeted investments will make sure ER beds are available for ER patients,” said Stevens. “That’s how we’ll put patients first.”

  1. The new St. Catharines hospital has a state-of-the-art facility and team of health professionals working to take care of Niagara residents. ER staff did a great job assessing priorities and keeping a full waiting room moving in to see docs and get urgent care. Great job by the Province in getting this building built on time and on budget.

  2. 1.56 Billion Dollars is on Budget? I am not going to get into the cost to the Southern tier of Niagara this NEW Jaj Mahal has caused. The Douglas and the Port Colborne hospitals are gone along with future proposals in the works for the.Welland General…The administrative cost of the NHS has ballooned out of all proportions ….this is a damn mess
