A Brush With Beatlemania – All Those Years Ago

Remembering The Last Time The Beatles Ever Played Live Together In Canada

By Linda McKellar

It was 50 years ago this August 17th.

Linda McKellar still has her tickets from not one, but two Beatle shows on August 17th, 1966 in Toronto. Notice the price on the tickets. The last time Paul McCartney performed in nearby Buffalo, New York, most tickets sold for well over $100.

As a teen I was lucky enough to work in a restaurant frequented by Harold Ballard (who was an executive partner and later the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Maple Leaf Gardens) after races at the Fort Erie track and he gave us tickets to see the Beatles every year, expensive ones, $5.50!

The experience of their concerts was beyond belief and something I will never forget. Continue reading

Another Side To Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie

‘A passionate advocate for Great Lakes water issues and the overall environmental movement.’

By Patrick Robson

Posted August 15th, 2016 on Niagara At Large

“Picture a century of water.” – a lyric from Tragically Hip’s song ‘Something On’.

At the time of this writing, the Tragically Hip are on the last leg of their final farewell tour – in Hamilton, Ottawa, and then the final date in their hometown, Kingston.

This last show will be enjoyed by people across the country, and indeed the globe, and there is no doubt that the anticipation is great for this finale of a Canadian institution. Thanks to my sister and brother-in-law, my wife and I attended the show in London, Ontario, and we’re still buzzing from it.

This was not our first Hip show – far from it. We’ve seen them at least a dozen times in various Ontario locales, several times in Western New York, and even in Erie Pennsylvania, in a cool venue called Warner Theater. Every show takes one on a journey of uniquely Canadian stories, and it is this story-telling that speaks to all of us and warrants an Order of Canada, in my view. Continue reading

And as of this posting, it is navigating its way through the Welland Canada enroute to ports along Lake Erie and the upper Great Lakes where it will spend most of the summer before journeying back down where it will enter the old Erie Canal system at Oswego, New York to sail down the Hudson to New York City this September.

Hundreds of cars lined the shores of the Welland Canada between Port Weller in St. Catharines and Thorold this July 4th evening waiting for a chance to see the Draken Harald Harfagre sail by. Purple Rain, Purple Rain – The Prince Of Rock Is Gone

A Brief One from Doug Draper

Posted April 21st, 2016 on Niagara At Large

We are aren’t quite through the first four months of 2016 and it is already proving to be a year of huge and heartbreaking loss in the world of pop music.prince

It began on New Year’s Day with news of the death of Natalie Cole, daughter of the legendary Nat King Cole and a greater singer in her own right, and continued with the passing of David Bowie, Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey, Earth, Wind & Fire’s Maurice White, Beatles producer George Martin, Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake & Palmer fame, and two members of the iconic late-1960s San Francisco group Jefferson Airplane, Paul Kantner and the group’s pre-Grace Slick lead singer Sgne Toly Anderson, and the list goes on.

And now singer, guitarist and rock and R&B performer extraordinaire Prince Rogers Nelson, known more simply and famously to the world as Prince, found dead in his suburban Minneapolis home this Thursday, April 21st at age 57.

“Dearly beloved

We are gathered here today

2 get through this thing called life

Electric word life

It means forever and that’s a mighty long time

But I’m here 2 tell u

There’s something else

The afterworld

A world of never ending happiness

U can always see the sun, day or night”

  • From ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, the opening song on Prince’s classic album ‘Purple Rain’

Celebrate Record Store Day – Saturday, April 16th – At One Of The Last Of The Greater Niagara Region’s Grand Old Record Stores

A Short One from Doug Draper

Posted April 15th, 2016 on Niagara At Large

It wasn’t so long ago that people who claim to be in the know about pop culture and how we will participate in it in the future were predicting the demise of record stores and almost anything that resembles the vinyl and shiny plastic disks we listened to music on in years gone by.records onecloseup

And for a while it looked it looks most sadly to this record store lover and others that they might be right after one grand old record store after another like Sam the Record Man on Yonge Street in Toronto and whole record store chains went the way of the dinosaurs as more and more people were choosing to use handheld gadgets to download their music from various online sources.

Then something fantastic happened. A whole new generation of music fans in their teens and 20s began discovering the magic of taking a disk out of an artfully packaged sleeve and giving it a spin on a turntable. And suddenly, there are stores featuring whole rows of music by thousands of artists – new and old – on vinyl records that had all but disappeared only a few decades ago.

This renaissance of vinyl has thankfully breathed new life into the last of the great old record stores that managed to barely hang in there selling music, as they also still do, on CDs. Continue reading

The Harriet Tubman Public School is born from the unity of three public schools in St. Catherine, one of which Frank attended as a child.

Intrigued by Harriet’s story, filmmaker Dorin Vasilescu, followed the creative process of the sculpture, documenting Frank’s every move while recreating history, telling her story from an outside perspective and developing a relationship with the piece.

The images set the story in the artist’s studio, placed in the heart of Florence, showing the sculpture coming to life, from the chair Harriet is sat on to the book placed in her hands.

“I think the best part about being an artist is to develop a relationship with your piece. Whether it was positioning her hand, the title of the book, or the tilt of the head, it felt like she was talking to me.” states Frank Rekrut. Continue reading

‘Fifth Beatle’ – George Martin – Crosses Abbey Road To Rock & Roll Heaven

A Fan’s Tribute from Doug Draper

Posted March 9th, 2016 on Niagara At Large

They called him “the fifth Beatle” and a convincing case can be made that without him at the console, The Beatles may never have emerged from inside the damp, dimly lit walls of the Cavern in Liverpool to conquer the world in ways that changed pop music forever.

Producer George Martin, right, listens to a playback with John Lennon, during the recording of the Sgt. Petter's album in 1967.

Producer George Martin, right, listens to a playback with John Lennon, during the recording of the Sgt. Petter’s album in 1967.

It was George Martin who heard earlier Beatles drummer Pete Best crash, boom and banging his way through an earlier take of ‘Love Me Do’ (you can hear too on The Beatles’ Anthology, Volume One) and said the group couldn’t move forward with him as a drummer. Enter Ringo Starr and the ingredients for the ‘Fab Four’ were complete.

And it was George Martin who raised the idea of following up ‘Love Me Do’, The Beatles’ first single, with a cover version of a song composed by someone outside the group – challenging John Lennon and Paul McCartney (by then determined to be The Beatles’ principle songwriters) to come back with a self-penned tune that was better. The song Lennon and McCartney composed was ‘Please, Please Me’ and when the group finished recording it, Martin leaned into the studio’s intercom and said; “Gentlemen, you’ve just made your first number one record.” Continue reading

Another Shining Star Is Lost To This World With Passing Of Maurice White

Maurice White belting one out during an Earth, Wind & Fire performance.

The song ‘That’s the Way of the World’, co-written by Maurice White and performed by the group he founded, Earth, Wind & Fire, was near the top of the playlist of funky, soulful ballads during a decade of the 1970s that was rich with funky, soulful tunes.

Maurice White, who died this February 3rd following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, is yet another pop star to join a growing list of true musical pioneer, along with David Bowie, Glenn Fry, co-founder of The Eagles and Paul Kantner, founder of Jefferson Airplane and an architect of the San Francisco sound of the 1960s, who have come to the end of their song barely five weeks in to this 2016. If there was a rock and roll heaven, they sure already had one hell of a band. And if its still around, they’ve got a super group by now that’s like one we’ve never seen down here on terra firma.

On day one of this January, 2016 alone, the news broke that Natalie Cole had joined the heavenly ensemble. And those harmonies? They could heal. They could fill you with joy. On a heartbreaker of a song, they could move you to tears and could sometimes leave your spine tingling.

And right up there was the co-founder and co-creator of it all – Glenn Frey, whose voice could sound so perfectly silky and raspy at the same time, and who died Monday, January 18th, 2016 at age 67.

Together, he and his equally accomplished musically mate Don Henley backed up one of pop music’s greatest female vocalists, Linda Ronstadt, who made one of thee first songs they wrote together, ‘Desperado’, a huge hit in 1973 before they made it one of the first in a long string of hits that would see them soaring to superstardom in a band called The Eagles. A Few Final Words On The Passing This Week Of David Bowie

From Doug Draper, Niagara At Large

Posted January 11th, 2016 on Niagara At Large

I haven’t found myself feeling this bad about the death of a pop artist in a long time, and I’m not sure why.bowie

I never saw David Bowie in concert, nor do I own that many of his albums.

And yet, for some reason, news of his death in the late hours of January 9th at age 69, following an 18-month battle with cancer he kept secret (reportedly even from most of his closest friends), hit me harder than the deaths last year of two of my all-time favourite music makers, Joe Cocker and B.B. King – both of whom I saw in concert a couple of times and own enough of their CDs to fill a good-size overnight bag.

Maybe Bowie’s hit me harder because above being a great performer of the music as the other two artists I mentioned certainly were, he was true pioneer, using his immense talents as composer and performer of songs to invite us to join him on journeys to once forbidden places, gender-wise and otherwise, few others in music dared to go. And by doing so, Bowie, in an intelligent, imaginative and most importantly, a peaceful way, broke down walls of fear and prejudice for countless millions of people. Continue reading

Canadian broadcast journalist and author George Jonas

Canadian broadcast journalist and author George Jonas

(Chris Wojnarowski, a longtime resident of Niagara, Ontario and a past contributor of commentary to Niagara At Large, sent NAL the following note in

response to the passing this January 1oth of pop art icon David Bowie.

In his note, Chris asked if NAL could also pay tribute to George Jonas, a Canadian broadcaster, poet and writer of many books, including the 1984 best seller Vengeance, who was honoured in 2013 with an Order of Canada membership and who also died this January 10th at age 80.

I let Chris know that in my view,  his note was a fine tribute to George Jonas and, as I promised him, we are posting it here – Doug Draper, Publisher, Niagara At Large)

Goodbye Natalie Cole – A Soulful Voice Leaves Us

A Brief One from Doug Draper, Niagara At Large

January 1st, 2016

“This will be an everlasting love.”

Those were the first words she sang in her very first hit ‘This Will Be’, a song for which she also won her very first Grammy Award for best R&B vocal performance in 1976.Natalie-Cole closer

Years later, in 1991, there was her fabulous album ‘Unforgettable With Love’ – a collection of songs made famous by her legendary father, the late Nat ‘King’ Cole’ and featuring moving duet with her late father on the title song, made possible through he wonders of modern recording technology.

Natalie Cole’s death late this past December 31st at 65 was made public this January 1st with the following statement from her family – “Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived … with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain UNFORGETTABLE in our hearts forever.”

Trusting that NAL subscribers don’t mind my posting this one as a longtime fan of both Coles.

2015 Was A Big Hit For New CDs By Aging Pop Artists & Adele

By Doug Draper,

Posted December 30th, 2015 on Niagara At Large at www.niagaraatlarge.com.

Those of you who have been visiting Niagara At Large for a while, know I like to break up all the news and commentary on the site with the odd piece on pop culture.

During this Holiday Season, following month after month of relentless politicking, punctuated shocks of one sort or another from around this crazy world, I get the impression that many people out there could use a bit of a break from that sort of stuff. So let me try a little end-of-year pop music round-up here.

Cory Wells, a Buffalo, New York native and a lead singer in the legendary rock band Three Dog Night, passed away this past October

Cory Wells, a Buffalo, New York native and a lead singer in the legendary rock band Three Dog Night, passed away this past October

For lovers of classic pop music, this passing year saw a bumper crop of very good to great CDs from artists stretching back to the golden years of the 1960s and 70s.

Being the music addict I am, I go running out to get almost any new CD the classic performers put out and am always thrilled when the music lives up to the legend. At the same time, I find myself feeling a little sad, knowing that most of these artists are now in their 60s and 70s, and it ain’t gonna last. The latest CD by them could turn out to be a final encore. Continue reading
