Until Trump Stops His War On Canada, All The Love In The World Won’t Inspire More Canadians To Cross The Border

From all of the years I have crossed the border to enjoy Buffalo’s festivals, its entertainment venues and to venture through its neighbourhoods full of some of the finest architecture on the continent, I have little doubt that is true.
The people of Buffalo live up to its billing as “the city of good neighbours” too. At the risk of offending some on my side of the border, I can walk along a sidewalk in that city’s Allentown, Elmwood Village or Cottage and Theatre districts and be greeted with more smiles and ‘how are you doings’ in an hour than I do here in a whole day on my side of the border with so many people wearing earbuds and playing with their smart phones
But here is the problem with s ‘Buffalo Loves Canada’ campaign that strives to remind people on both sides of the border that “whatever else may be happening in the world” we still have a “strong bond.”

Trump’s repeated threats of using economic force to make Canada a 51st state of the United States has drawn anger and caused significant numbers of Canadians to say no to crossing the border.
The problem is that the City of Buffalo and its people, and the State of New York and its Governor for that matter, are not going to succeed in getting significant numbers of Canadians who have stopped crossing the border to come back as long as they have a President of the United States who is damaging our economy with punishing tariffs and who continues to threaten our sovereignty with his ‘make Canada a 51st state’ rhetoric.
Simply assuring people on the Canadian side of the border that Buffalo loves them is not going to bring us back.
What people in Buffalo and other border communities on the American side of the border that are reportedly losing billions of dollars in business because of fewer visits from Canadians should be spending their time and energy on is pressuring the individual in the White House who started this whole war against Canada to knock it off.
Until Americans across the border can get Trump to cease and dessist – if that is even possible – all of the love in the world won’t buy a single order of Buffalo wings.
Now here is a message to Canadians from the Buffalo Loves Canada campaign –Buffalo Still Loves Canada –
Dear Canadians,
Greetings from the other side of the Niagara River—from the city just beyond the end of the Queen Elizabeth Way.
For generations, we’ve made memories together, crossing the border for day trips and weekend getaways. We’ve cheered on each other’s sports teams, browsed each other’s malls, supported each other’s theaters, and enjoyed each other’s cuisine. (Looking at you, Tim Hortons, Swiss Chalet, and Labatt Blue!) Your country has always been an important part of our region’s identity.
Over time, those shared experiences have grown into something deeper: a lasting friendship between our two communities. And we want you to know—whatever else may be happening in the world—we still deeply value that bond. We’re proud to be the nearby neighbor and friend you’ve always counted on.
Warmly,
Your friends in Buffalo
