The Stakes for America, for Canada and for so many other nations around the world could not be greater
A Brief Commentary from Doug Draper, an unabashed Canadian for Kamala
Posted October 17th, 2024 on Niagara At Large
On November 5th – just a couple of short weeks from now – millions of Americans will go to the polls to vote in an election that may very well decide the fate for peace, democracy and a good life, not only for people in their country, but for people in Canada and in nations around the world.
The choice in this U.S. presidential election, like no other in our lifetime, could not be starker.
It is a choice between a malignant narcissistic demagogue in the name of Donald Trump who Mark Milley, a recently retired U.S. general and Joint Chief chair was recently described as “a fascist to the core” – a crazed maniac who has openly discussed ripping up the U.S. Constitution, using the military to go after his “enemies” in politics, in the media and other walks of life, and rounding up immigrants of colour for mass deportation, on one hand.
And then there is U.S. Vice President and former Senator and California Attorney General Kamala Harris, who has a long record of standing up for freedom and democracy, and for opportunities for others to share in a decent life.
I know that some may be wondering why I keep commenting on this election on a news and commentary site that should focus on issues of interest and concern in our region, province and country. My answer to that is that there is so much at stake here for peace and democracy and a healthy economy and environment for all of us in who wins this election.

Kamala Harris, on the cover of the book she wrote five years ago about her journey in life.and politics., including her close relationship with her mother and others who taught her the values and principles she embraces to this day.
That is why I will repeat again what I have said before and that is to urge all of Niagara At Large’s American readers (and there are at least some out there) of voting age to vote and to urge press their friends and neighbours to vote for Kamala Harris.
I also urge all of my fellow Canadians who have relatives and friends in the United States to do the same. And if you live close enough to the Canada/U.S. border and have the time and will to contact the nearest Kamala Harris campaign office (there is one in Buffalo. N.Y.) and volunteer to go door-to-door canvasing for her, please consider doing it.
Fortunately, Kamala Harris has been receiving a good number of endorsements across her country from high-profile individuals groups across the political spectrum, and from media organizations like the New York Times, including this recent endorsement from the time-honourned Vogue magazine.
I will leave you with an excerpt from that Vogue endorsement, which does as good a job as any of summing up the choice in this U.S. election –
“Imagine America led by a president who is looking forward, not backward, who isn’t trailed by the shadow of January 6 and so much else. This choice isn’t a choice—it never was. The other candidate is unfit to be president, selling division, anger, fear, and a false dream of the past, promising little other than retribution for his opponents. In President Harris we would have something new and something we desperately need: progress, hope, a force for unity, a page turned, a country made new again—our better future brought tantalizingly closer”.
