(A Brief Note from NAL reporter and publisher Doug Draper –
What follows is an excerpt that deals with climate change from a Statement Prime Minister Justin circulated this November 23rd following the reading of the Speech from the Throne.

“To create a more resilient economy, create jobs, and grow the middle class, Canada must take strong and bold climate action.
“That’s why we’re moving forward to cap and cut oil and gas sector emissions, investing in public transit, and mandating the sale of zero-emissions vehicles.
“We have the raw materials and skilled work force to produce the clean products that the world will need to cut pollution and create a green economy. The Government of Canada will continue to invest in our workers and industry to help bring us into the economy of the future, while also taking action to clean the air that we breathe and protect Canadians from extreme weather events.
“Together, we need to go further and move faster on climate action, not just to protect our environment, but to grow our economy in a way that leaves no worker behind.”

It is so distressing to see the Liberal government continuing on the same path of non-action on climate change, and perhaps even more distressing to see Stephen Guilbeault, the new Environment Minister, mouthing the same meaningless nonsense. Capping oil and gas sector emissions, for instance, does not imply phasing out the production of fossil fuels; if that were the government’s intention, then the Throne Speech would have included the cancellation of the TMX. Instead, the onus is on the fossil fuel sector itself to reduce emissions, using a variety of expensive and unproven technologies to capture carbon — financed by our tax dollars. When we have the Environment Minister referring to Canada’s forests as a carbon SINK, then we know we cannot trust this government on climate. (Our forests have in fact been emitting more carbon than they absorb for many years, but the government has been hiding behind creative accounting.) How long are Canadians going to put up with this deliberate dishonesty? The Liberal government is practicing climate denial by way of dissimulation, relying on the ignorance and credulity of voters. As the recent disaster in BC has shown, Canadians cannot afford to be this naive. Climate change is here now.
