Poll Says Most Ontario Residents Don’t Want A Provincial Election – Not Now, Anyway

By Doug Draper

A new Forum Research poll, hardly the baddest ones to rely on, suggests that as much as talk of an Ontario election might be in the wind this spring, a majority of Ontario residents of voting age don’t want an election right now.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath - A new poll suggests most Ontario voters like her the most as a leader but would not necessarily vote for her party to form a government

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath – A new poll suggests most Ontario voters like her the most as a leader but would not necessarily vote for her party to form a government

But if for some reason the NDP and Conservatives agree to gang up on the minority Liberal government of Kathleen Wynne and there is one, the rest of the poll might have anyone speculating what would happen.

As far as the favourability ratings of the three main party leaders are concerned, NDP leader Andrea Horwath is at the top with 44 per cent, compared to Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne, who has gained some ground from 40 per cent this month from 34 per cent on the same poll in March, and Conservative opposition leader Tim Hudak who lags behind at 27 per cent.

Interestingly enough, the same poll shows the Conservative Party ahead of both the Liberals and NDP in a general election, with the NDP, inspite of the popularity of its party’s leader, falling last.

According to this latest poll, 35 per cent of Ontario voters who opt for the Conservaitves while 32 per cent would vote for the Liberals and 26 per cent would vote for the NDP.

One can’t help but wonder why the Conservative Party ranks first and yet its leader is so far behind, and why those who declare themselves to be Conservatives, in the same poll, are more interested in

What do you think? We will leave it to our readers who dare to share their names with their comments to weigh in here.

  1. I am surprised they haven’t replaced the government already, what with the EHealth boondoggle, Ornge fiasco, serious problems with diluted chemotherapy drugs in Windsor and elsewhere…. and the Oakville, Missassauga gas plant financially disastrous relocation to save Liberal seats. The last problem is the most serious as it shows a government that will sell its soul to save its job. Once they made this decision and it progressed so far, they should have stuck by it as a matter of principle.
I think of myself as non-partisan, but on these issues, either the government has been incompetent, negilgent or corrupt…or a combination of all 3. In my opinion, they have lost their right to govern.

    Here goes!
Part of me wants an election now, to throw out the Liberals.
Part of me doesn’t want an election now because it would mean either Hudak or Horwath as premier.
I really want to vote conservative … but cannot do so because of Tim Hudak. Quite simply, I do not trust him. That is a personal stand. I think he has taken the Ontario Conservative Party too far to the right. We saw what Mike Harris did. Hudak wants to go even further.
Andrea Horwath appears to be intelligent and rather nice. Unfortunately, she has the same problem that plagued Bob Rae — no bench strength. When Bob Rae was premier, about 50% of the intelligence in his cabinet was in his head. Most of the rest were just not up to the job!
I think Andrea Horwath alone is probably about one-third to one-half of the current collective NDP brainpower.
And so we come back to the Liberals. Kathleen Wynne is a nice change from McGuinty (so far) and appears to be able to tell the truth (for the most part). The problem is that she kept too many, such as Deb Matthews and Ted McMeekin, in cabinet and did not promote people like Kim Craitor. She should have fired most of the former cabinet members and gone with new blood.
Bottom line – no matter what, election or no election, the taxpayers of Ontario will continue to be sodomized by their elected government.

Nothing but the same from McSquinty’s protégé. No acknowledgement of failed policy. No acceptance of responsibility for the waste of tax dollars of the past. No relief for tax payers moving forward.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t trust any of them, but I trust mini-mcsquinty the least.
We can not reward the liberal party with a continued grasp on power. What message would that send to other would be governing parties?
While I am certain the majority don’t want an election. I am certain the majority do not want the liberals to remain in power and that my friend is reason we have elections. To do what the majority wants and here’s hoping the majority takes the time get a clue!
Out with the liberals, out with mini-mcquinty (kathleen) …….Just sayin……

  4. I am waiting to see what will be in the budget on Thursday, even though I am not holding my breath. I personally don’t trust any politicians.
