Allen And Kormos Urge Canada Post To Return To Bargaining Table

(Niagara At Large is posting this June 16 joint news release from Niagara’s two NDP representatives for our readers information.)

Welland – Welland MP Malcolm Allen and MPP Peter Kormos call on the Federal Labour Minister to order Canada Post to end the lockout and get back to meaningful negotiations with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

“The lockout by Canada Post is irresponsible and is an attack on workers and their rights,” said Allen.

There have been honks of support from passing motorists at the Welland Canada Post Building on Division Street as workers are now into day two of a forced lockout.

Canada Post is not subsidized by the federal government or taxpayers, and made almost $2 billion in profits for the past 15 years.

“Canada Post raked in billions of dollars in profits a year and is trying to squeeze more at the expense of families across Ontario,” said Kormos.  “The only way the Federal government is going to fix this, is to order Canada Post back to the bargaining table, not by taking it out on the workers.”

Gerry Tullo, President of CUPW Local 628 which represents 200 workers in Dunnville, Port Colborne and Welland said the union is working very hard to resolve this situation.

“The union has presented proposals to solve a variety of problems, but Canada Post has ignored them and is only interested in concessions,” said Tullo.
Both Allen and Kormos said negotiations are about give and take, but Canada Post is just interested in taking.  They urge Canada Post to return to the bargaining table.

  1. The “Back to Work” legislation threat imposed by the Federal Conservatives is clear indication that their goal is the same as other Corporate funded governments in Canada and throughout the western hemisphere…..to break the unions.
People say Unions had their place ONCE well I agree but what is the Alternative…I was lucky I worked for a company that had NO UNION but they were one of the best companies in the world in how they treated their employees..So in Essence I union should not be needed if the CEOs used common sense and sold one of their jets and treated their employees with dignity and respect by offering a liveable life with wages and concern for them as members of the human race instead of pawns ….

  2. It’s currently fashionable to denigrate unions, even by those who need them most, but once they are gone, and corporations have even more “liberties”, it will continue to be a race to the bottom. Living wages will continue to disappear, as will benefits and so on.

“Full time” at Walmart is about 28 hours, so the company doesn’t have to pay benefits etc. Try living on a Walmart wage.

Just want the mail to come back … as a small business person, we have lost a lot of income, thanks to the lock-out.
