A Brief Tribute Posted by Doug Draper on Niagara At Large with a remembrance aired on PBS
Posted May 27th, 2026 on Niagara At Large
He was, among so many of those he performed with, from Charlie Parker and John Coltrane to Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis, one of the very last of the great legends from one of the greatest eras of jazz music standing.
Sonny Rollins, who will almost surely be remembered by lovers of jazz music everywhere for one of the greatest albums from that genre of all time, 1956’s Saxophone Colossus, died this past May 25th at his home in Woodstock, New York at age 95.
He was a living, breathing encyclopedia of the history of jazz music from the late 1940s until he took his last breath, and one can only hope that others mined as much as they could of that remarkable musical history from him before he finished his journey on this earth.
