Toronto -– It is shocking that the Ministry of Energy is moving to overrule the Ontario Energy Board, which made a very sound decision to save homeowners money by encouraging new homes to be built with heat pumps, rather than gas furnaces.

The speed at which this decision was made by the Ministry is also concerning.

The OEB decision would eliminate the subsidy for housing developers to connect to the gas system effective January 1, 2025. Currently, developers can receive a subsidy worth up to $6k per home, with an average of $4.5k per home.

The OEB said eliminating this subsidy would encourage developers to install heat pumps instead, which will improve affordability by lowering heating costs while also reducing risks and costs for all other gas ratepayers. Continue reading →

A Call-Out for a Green Christmas from Doug Draper, reporter/publisher, Niagara At Large

I heard a newscaster from one of the cable networks saying that at least some people around us –and maybe even you – are dreaming of one of those ‘White Christmas’s’ that Bing Crosby used to sing about.

So you say you’re dreaming of a white Christmas. Do you want to end up possibly looking like this? An image of Omar Sharif from the movie Dr. Zhivago after suffering his way through snow and ice in the frigid fields of a Russian winter.

To that I say; “Really? You’ve got to be kidding!”

The forecast for this Christmas is a green one and that has me dancing merrily away with sugar plums in my head.

For those of you dreaming of a white Christmas, try finding a copy of the movie Dr. Zhivago and fast forward it to the part where the lovesick doctor (played by Omar Sharif) is wading for what seems like days through mountains of frigid Siberian snow, with blue cheeks and icicles frozen to his beard, in search of the woman of his dreams. Dense clouds of smoke from a record number of wildfires this 2023 assaulted the respiratory systems of people and other living beings across Canada and much of the U.S. No cost can be placed on the huge loss of forests and habitat for wildlife

It has been a rough two or three years for many of us with the pandemic and all of the illness and death and isolation and  it brought, and with this passing year’s  record number of damaging and destructive floods, wind storms, wildfires and extreme heat episodes brought to us by all of the carbon pollution overheating our planet. 

So here is a wish for warm times  and  peace  to those of us who celebrate Christmas, and for the same to all of our friends and neighbors and to everyone on this Earth  who celebrate the Holiday Season in other ways..

Yet while so many of us  gather together with our loved ones for this Holiday, so many other lives around the world are being torn apart and cut short by war.

With that in mind, I leave you with a song written many years ago by John Lennon and performed by John and Yoko. It seems to me to be a fitting song at this time.

With the Greenbelt scandal controversy dogging them for most of the year, not to mention an ongoing RCMP investigation  that ensued, along with  protest after protest over the way they have been mishandling short-changing key  services like education, affordable housing and health care, you would think that Doug Ford and his Conservatives would now be circling the drain in terms of  public popularity.

Toronto, Ontario – We are relieved to learn that The Beer Store’s successful reuse and recycling program will be preserved. The existing deposit return program keeps hundreds of millions of reusable glass beer bottles in circulation, and even more cans and plastic containers out of landfills and the environment.

The preservation of this successful program indicates that the province recognizes its value. It is only logical that it would also see the value of a complementary deposit program for non-alcoholic beverage containers.

The current blue bin recycling system is failing: only 43 per cent of non-alcoholic beverage containers are collected and recycled in Ontario.

I had a CBC television news network on this past Sunday, December 17^th when I heard one of the broadcasters say; “Keith Richards, guitarist for The Rolling Stones… and immediately I found myself thinking; “Oh no, he has died.

And why wouldn’t that be my first thought?

For us children of the 1960s, the music heroes we grew up with are now passing on at an accelerated pace.

There was Jeff Beck, guitarist extraordinaire with The Yardbards, Robbie Robertson, the guitarist and principle songwriter for The Band, and Charlie Watts, the drummer for The Rolling Stones, just to name a few who left us this year alone. Continue reading →

A News Release from Niagara’s Regional Government

NIAGARA, Ontario – Niagara Region’s 2024 Budget process is now complete following last (Thursday, December 14^th) night’s Regional Council meeting. The budget continues to support and invest in the programs and services Niagara residents rely on every day.

For 2024, the portion of the General Levy to support Niagara Region operations, Niagara’s agencies, boards and commissions, including Niagara Regional Police, will increase by 3.72 per cent.

In addition to these operating costs, the 2024 General Levy is required to accommodate critical investments in, historically underfunded, infrastructure renewal throughout Niagara Region with a 1.5 per cent increase dedicated to capital project financing.

Finally, an additional 1.8 per cent increase was required to accommodate for the financial impacts of provincial policy under Bill 23, which required municipalities to provide development charge exemptions.

In total, Council approved the General Levy budget with an increase of $38.6 million in 2024 equaling a 7.02 per cent property tax increase on the Regional portion of the tax bill.

This coming January 1^st, 2024 marks the first anniversary of the launch of a new consolidated transit system in Niagara, marking the end of a patchwork of local transit services that fell short of encouraging more people in our region to opt for a bus rather than a car to take them to where they want to go.

Niagara, Ontario – Niagara Region is starting a Red Light Camera program beginning late January 2024. The Red Light Camera program will issue tickets to drivers who run red lights.

Earlier this year Regional Council approved the use of Red Light Cameras at 10 signalized intersections throughout Niagara. A mid-20th Century Neanderthal’s Vision of Ontario’s future, with less than a wit of concern for the climate crises or the value of food-growing lands and a healthy ecosystem.

Short of throwing Doug Ford and his Conservative Party minions out of office in the next provincial election, there doesn’t seem to be any end to this Ford government’s drive to deconstruct and privatize iconic public places like Ontario Place, and to take us back to the 1950s with unbridled urban sprawl and   more construction of super highways to accomodate ever more cars.

As has already been shown through the controversy over Ford and his gang attempting to carve up our Greenbelt for developers, there are large numbers of residents across the province – both rural and urban – who want to see our precious green lands protected for present and future generations.

Service cuts and fare increases were not what was envisioned for the Niagara community when the Region of Niagara amalgamated transit into a regional service.

However, that’s what current and future transit riders can expect now that Regional Council has asked the Niagara Region Transit Commission (NTC) to cut their proposed budget for a third time.

The NTC staff recommended a 10 per cent increase. This increase was meant to cover the takeover of responsibilities such as snow removal from bus stops formerly undertaken by Local Area Municipalities (LAMs) as well as inherited capital funding applications, and already in progress projects that had to be completed — costs which were not fully accounted for when the LAM’s transit operating budgets were consolidated to create the NTC’s first-year operating budget. TORONTO, Ontario – This past November 22^nd  the Financial Accountability Office of Ontario (FAO) released its final report in the Costing Climate Change Impacts to Public Infrastructure (CIPI) series. This report projects the budgetary impacts of extreme rainfall, extreme heat and freeze-thaw cycles on public infrastructure in Ontario.

Much of Ontario’s public infrastructure was designed based on historical climate data, and the climate is changing, leaving the $708 billion portfolio vulnerable to climate hazards.

In the absence of adaptation, more frequent and intense climate hazards are projected to add $4.1 billion per year on average over the century to the cost of maintaining existing public infrastructure in a medium emissions scenario. Continue reading →

An Urgent Message To The World From The United Nations

With global temperatures hitting record highs, and extreme weather events affecting people around the globe, this year’s UN climate change conference, COP28, is a pivotal opportunity to correct course and accelerate action to tackle the climate crisis.

COP28 is where the world (gathered to take) stock of progress on the Paris Agreement – the landmark climate treaty concluded in 2015 – and chart a course of action to dramatically reduce emissions and protect lives and livelihoods.

The science is clear: to preserve a livable climate, the production of coal, oil, and gas must rapidly decline, and global renewable power capacity – including wind, solar, hydro and geothermal energy – needs to triple by 2030.

At the same time, financing for adaptation and investments in climate resilience need a quantum leap.

“I find Niagara doesn’t have the culture of riding the bus. It (this lack of culture) is inbred (and) it has been that way for a long time,” said Welland Regional Councillor Leanna Villella at a meeting of Niagara Region’s budget review committee this past November 30th.

Mat Siscoe, a Regional Councillor for St. Catharines, the Niagara municipality where he also serves as mayor and where, as a city councillor, played a lead role in in bringing together transit services in St. Catharines Niagara Falls, Welland and other area municipalities in finally creating a single Regional transit system that was officially launched, this past January 2023.

At the November 30th budget review meeting, Siscoe had this to say about a “transit culture” in Niagara and why he feels Niagara’s regional government needs to one and not cut transit services and hike fares for bus riders as some regional councillors appear ready to do.

“The point has been made that we don’t have a transit culture,” said Siscoe said as part of his overall defense of a budget t7.8 per cent budget increase the Niagara Regional Transit Commission recently put before the Region’s council.

In its current form, the draft legislation would restore Greenbelt protection to the fifteen key areas of farmland and natural heritage the government stripped of protection in December 2022.

“What we have here is a failure to communicate.”

That often-quoted line from the 1967 Paul Newman film ‘Cool Hand Luke’ certainly applies to Ontario Premier Doug Ford and his Conservative government and all the many fast ones they have pulled on we, the people, going back to the first days they were sworn in to office in June of 2018.

The fast ones began with Ford and company taking a butcher’s axe to Toronto’s city council, literally cutting the number of council members in half.

They continued with gutting a “basic income” program launched by the previous provincial Liberal government for helping low-income people rise above poverty, the closing of Ontario’s Environmental Ombudsman’s Office and weakening of tools the NPCA and other Conservation Authorities can use to protect our natural resources, and tearing up dozens of contracts with private and public sector parties to move from sources of dirty, polluting energy to green, renewable energy sources. With (the federal government’s recent)fall economic statement and the UN climate COP28 starting this November 30th, the Green Budget Coalition today released a comprehensive set of fiscal recommendations for how the federal government can simultaneously address these linked climate and biodiversity crises, while strengthening Canada’s economy and improving affordability and quality of life for people in Canada.

“We’re highlighting the most effective and urgent federal investment opportunities for climate, nature, jobs, and affordability,” said Will Bulmer, Green Budget Coalition Co-Chair and Lead Specialist, Government Relations at WWF-Canada, on releasing the Coalition’s Recommendations for Budget 2024.

“On nature, Canada’s international commitments announced at COP15 in Montréal need to be followed by leadership and long-term funding. One of them is Jane Goodall, one of the world’s foremost experts on on chimpanzee behavior and how it relates to humans, and a dedicated advocate for protecting wildlife  and our environment.

At age 89, Goodall is still fighting the good fight for out earth like few others more than half her age.

Not so long ago she was interviewed for CBC’s The National and the result were words of concern, of wisdom and of inspiration, not to mention a call to action to save what we have left of this world’s precious, life-sustaining resources.

On this day of her memorial service and funeral, how sad it is to say a final farewell to former U.S. First Lady and humanitarian Rosalynn Carter.

She and her husband Jimmy Carter are among the most decent, honest and down-to-earth President and First Lady who ever inhabited the White House.

They visited Niagara, Ontario about two and a half decades ago and everyone I talked to who met them said they were beautiful people who would start anyconversation with locals by saying; “Just call us Jimmy and Rosalynn.’

Not surprising for a couple who were living in affordable housing during Jimmy Carter’s presidential run and who forbade the playing of ‘Hail to the Chief’ while they were in the White House.

They had solar panels placed on the roof of the White House however and were the the first President and First Lady to raise warnings about climate change. And that was back in the mid-to-late 1970s!

Compare that to the sorry likes of the Reagans and Trumps.

Peak power demand management or gas plants?

Technologies like heat pumps and electric vehicles are taking off. That’s good news for our climate but concerns have been raised about the impact of this trend on electricity supplies. 

There’s no question that here in Ontario the Ford Government has been caught flat footed by the pace of these changes, which are rapidly accelerating despite the government eliminating incentives for EVs and slashing energy efficiency program budgets. The government has instead used growth in electricity demand driven by electrification as one of its rationales for massively  expanding the use of polluting gas-fired power plants [https://www.cleanairalliance.org/campaigns/gas/], claiming the province has no other options. The continued slaughtering by poachers of such magnificent animals as Elephants, Rhinos and Tigers – simply because some creeps among our species want their body parts – should, in my view, be treated by Canada and other countries around this world as crimes on par with the deliberate murder of humans.

Poachers and their so-called customers should face maximum  hard time in prison.

Short of tracking down these people, who obviously couldn’t give a damn if these great animals go extinct, .and punishing them to the fullest extent of  the law, what are we going to say to our children and grandchildren, and how will they view us, when the last elephant on this earth we all share is gone.

So it is very good news that Canada’s federal government has finally done what it should have a long time ago – put a ban on the trafficking of  elephant ivory and rhino horns in this country. Let’s now hope and press the government if we have to, to actively enforce this ban.

From the petition, started by the Ivory Free Canada coalition, that reached over 700,000 signatures that showed overwhelming support by citizens to save elephants and rhinos; to endless advocacy; to the collaboration of like minds working together to save a species, the end result has been a success. It took a village and a community dedicated to the cause of making the world a better place for elephants to get this done and we should all be stupendously proud of our efforts!

Who would have ever guessed that a small group of committed and disciplined people, who advocated for the betterment of elephants, could evoke such integrity and inspiration from like-minded partners, and see their dream come to fruition. We are humbled and grateful.

Nov. 27, 2023 – Niagara Health is warning the public about a scam using its name to try and steal personal information.

The telephone scam involves a caller claiming to be an NH staff member asking people for their name, social insurance number, date of birth and address.

Niagara Health does not call patients to confirm that type of information and would NEVER ask a patient for their SIN number over the phone. The only time Niagara Health asks for a SIN number is in a case involving the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board and that is only done in-person.

When Niagara Health calls patients, the name and number will appear on call displays. But, we do not call and ask for that type of personal information.

Niagara Health has notified Niagara Regional Police about this scam. Anyone who receives a similar call is asked to call police at 905-688-4111.

Every day we can turn on our screens at home and witness the amount of suffering and death caused by wars – many of them brought on by war-minded leaders of governments or terror groups.

It is heartbreaking to watch and even more hard to  imagine how horrifying it must be for the men, women and children trying to stay alive at ground zero.

One way or another, all of us have got to raise our voice and use the freedom we have as voting citizens in a democracy to elect leaders who will put an end to all this carnage.

As greenhouse gas emissions hit new highs, temperature records tumble and climate impacts intensify, the Emissions Gap Report 2023: Broken Record – Temperatures hit new highs, yet world fails to cut emissions (again) finds that the world is heading for a temperature rise far above the Paris Agreement goals unless countries deliver more than they have promised.

The report is the 14th edition in a series that brings together many of the world’s top climate scientists to look at future trends in greenhouse gas emissions and provide potential solutions to the challenge of global warming.

What’s new in this year’s report?

• The report finds that there has been progress since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015.
• Greenhouse gas emissions in 2030, based on policies in place, were projected to increase by 16 per cent at the time of the agreement’s adoption. Today, the projected increase is 3 per cent.
• However, predicted 2030 greenhouse gas emissions still must fall by 28 per cent for the Paris Agreement 2°C pathway and 42 per cent for the 1.5°C pathway.
• As things stand, fully implementing unconditional Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) made under the Paris Agreement would put the world on track for limiting temperature rise to 2.9°C above pre-industrial levels this century. Fully implementing conditional NDCs would lower this to 2.5°C.

The report calls for all nations to accelerate economy-wide, low-carbon development transformations. Countries with greater capacity and responsibility for emissions will need to take more ambitious action and support developing nations as they pursue low-emissions development growth.

The report looks at how stronger implementation can increase the chances of the next round of NDCs, due in 2025, bringing down greenhouse gas emissions in 2035 to levels consistent with 2°C and 1.5°C pathways. It also looks at the potential and risks of Carbon Dioxide Removal methods – such as nature-based solutions and direct air carbon capture and storage.

A Message from the Ontario Clean Air Alliance, a non-profit citizens group calling for carbon-free, renewable energy solutions

The Ford Government is making it clearer than ever that it has no interest in addressing climate change, despite record global temperatures and a summer of fires that blanketed much of this province in choking smoke.

Using the “Independent” Electricity System Operator (IESO) to defend the province’s commitment to burning more gas, the Ford government is pushing the federal government towater down its draft Clean Electricity Regulationsby extending the 2035 deadline for phasing out gas plants.

If the federal government were to accept the province’s position, the existing Port lands and Halton Hills gas plants in the GTA would be able to operate at full capacity until 2039and 2040 respectively. And Ontario’s third-largest gas-fired power plant, the 900 MW Napanee Generating Station, could operate at full capacity until 2050!

This is what climate change denial looks like. 

And it is sadly being embraced by an agency that has blindly dug in on the idea that the only way to address peak demand in summer months is by firing up gas plants. Continue reading →

Niagara, Ontario – Niagara Region Budget Review Committee of the Whole approved a zero-budget increase for waste management services. As a result, most residents will see a decrease in their waste management special levy because some of the cost will be covered by assessment growth.

If you are getting ready to cross – either way the Canada/U.S. bridges along the Niagara River, you might want to reconsider

Due to an explosion involving a car crashing into a customs building on the American side of the Rainbow Bridge earlier this Wednesday, November 22^nd afternoon, the Rainbow Bridge and Peace Bridge, and reportedly even the Queenston-Lewiston have been closed to all traffic while an investigation got underway.

Since the explosion shortly after noon hour, agents from the New York State Police and FBI, as well as investigators from the Ontario Provincial Police and Royal Canadian Mounted Police have been working together to determine why a car from the U.S. side of the Rainbow Bridge accelerated to high rates of speed and exploded as it crashed into US. QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls Riding) advocated for the restoration of 24/7 services at two urgent care centers in Niagara, including Douglas Memorial Urgent Care in Fort Erie.

In June 2023, it was announced (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/fort-erie-port-colborne-urgent-care-centres-1.6861656) that the Fort Erie urgent care centre would have reduced operating hours as a result of staffing shortages.

Don Alexander, RIP

Those Paul Simon lyrics came to mind when I learned late this October that Don Alexander, one of Niagara’s most dedicated community activists, died just about a month shy of his 89^th birthday.

Many younger people might not know who Don Alexander was. But through all of the many decades he worked through words and action to build healther communities and to protect and preserve our natural heritage, he did his part to leave a lasting legacy for the good, for generations to come.

I can say, as a former St. Catharines Standard reporter back in the years when the newspaper was still independently owned by its founders, the Burgoyne family, Don Alexander was among the many people who raised concern and supporter me and my old Standard colleagues when the paper fell into the hands of Conrad Black and his Hollinger vultures who proceeded to gut the newsroom of editors and reporters.

Don truly understood why having a well-staffed newsroom working as a watchdog in the community is so important for keeping people informed on issues of interest and concern, and for safeguarding a free and open democracy.

A celebration of Don’s life will take place on what would have been his 89^th birthday from 2 to 5 p.m. this coming Sunday November 26^th at the Niagara Artists Centre on 354 St. Paul Street in downtown St. Catharines.

Sad to see that Don has joined the great migration. He was an exemplary citizen who will truly be missed.

A Statement from Ashley Wallis, Associate Director, regarding the federal court’s decision to strike Plastic Manufactured Items from the Canadian Environmental Protection Act’s list of toxic substances

Toronto, Ontario – We’re dismayed to see that the court sided with Big Plastic despite the industry’s blatant disregard for plastic’s catastrophic impacts on the environment. It’s unsurprising that an industry so closely tied to fossil oil and gas, environmental injustice, and mass consumption would fight the government’s ability to reign in plastics. However, we are confident that this will not derail efforts toward a future free from plastic pollution.

Environmental Defence will not be backing down from this fight, and we urge the federal government to stand firm. Canada must quickly appeal this court decision and move forward with its planned regulatory and policy agenda, including bans on harmful single-use plastics. The evidence is clear: decades of research demonstrate plastic products are toxic to the environment, and there is increasing concern over its harmful impact on human health too.

The world is united in a desire for coordinated action to address the plastic pollution crisis. UN member states from around the world are currently gathered in Nairobi, Kenya to negotiate towards a global treaty on plastic pollution. People in Canada agree too—polling from Oceana Canada shows overwhelming support for action on plastics, including bans on harmful single-use plastics.

Niagara’s Regional Headquarters in Thorold

Niagara, Ontario –At its meeting held Thursday, Nov. 16, Niagara Region Budget Review Committee of the Whole approved operating budget increases for water and wastewater services for 2024.

A budget increase of 7.95 per cent for water and wastewater services addresses inflationary pressures, the impact of higher costs for the equipment and materials that keep drinking water safe, and capital renewal needs.

The approved water and wastewater budgets are effective Jan. 1 of each year and billed to the local area municipalities based on water and wastewater usage. As the wholesaler of water and wastewater services in Niagara, the Region will bill the local municipalities, which will, in-turn, incorporate the new rates into resident water bills. The City of St. Catharines By-law Enforcement Division and Municipal Works forestry staff have concluded an intensive investigation into the reported destruction of City-owned trees and plants within the Martindale Pond area.

The investigation has led to legal action against four individuals, each facing 194 counts, totalling 776 charges for violations of the City’s tree by-law. A Brief One for Remembrance Day

Grave markers in France, for Canadians who fought and died in arguably the one of the bloodiest wars in human history – World War One or what some at the time hoped would be “the war to end all wars.” It wasn’t.

I could write a few lines about my wish that we, as a supposedly intelligent species on this planet, find a way to forever put an end to war. But how many would bother reading, let alone taking my words seriously.

My guess is, not many.

This November 11^th, as millions of people across Canada and other countries flock to memorials and cemeteries for a moment of silence, men, women and children are suffering and dying from bullets and bombs in Ukraine, in Israel and the Gaza Strip, and in too many other places around the world.

And in all of the seven decades I have been around and going back for as many centuries as you want to think about, it has gone on and on and on.

So I leave you with the words “when will we ever learn” and to Peter Seeger’s sorrowful and powerful song, that you can hear by clicking on the screen below –

Niagara, Ontario – The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA), Ontario Nature and Conservation Ontario are pleased to announce the addition of 11 properties, encompassing 790 hectares, towards Canada’s ambitious goal of protecting 30 per cent of its lands and waters by 2030.

With this recent addition, NPCA’s total contributions to the national protected areas target now stands at an impressive 1,622 hectares, which is equal in size to four Stanley Parks in British Columbia, or, closer to home, almost 650 Montebello Parks in St. Catharines.

Canada endorsed the goal, known as the 30 by 30 target, as part of the landmark Global Biodiversity Framework at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Montreal last December.

The 11 properties, evaluated in partnership with Ontario Nature, include Beamer Memorial, Cave Springs, Humberstone Marsh, Lathrop, Louth, Morgan’s Point, Mountainview, Mud Lake, Wainfleet Wetlands, Willoughby Marsh and Woolverton. Each property – all of which are accessible to the public with the exception of Lathrop which is held in trust by NPCA – was assessed for its unique ecological characteristics and diverse ecosystems and determined to meet the strict national standards for the protection of biodiversity, qualifying them as Protected Areas. Toronto, Ontario  – Just weeks after revelations of impropriety forced the Ontario government to reverse its imposition of corrupt settlement boundary expansions on unwilling City and Regional governments, a leaked letter from Municipal Affairs Minister Paul Calandra suggests that the Premier and Cabinet ministers are doubling down and trying to make the mayors of lower-tier municipalities accomplices to the scandal by having them rubber-stamp the government’s forced farm, forest and wetland eating boundary expansions.

While the Ontario government has announced the reversal of the city and town boundary expansions in the short term, a letter from Minister Paul Calandra dated November 2, 2023 revealed a new consultation process calculated to “launder” the same improper planning decisions by replicating, at the municipal level the opaque, arbitrary and concentrated power that gave rise to them. A Call-Out to All of Us from the Basic Income Canada Network

A Brief Foreword by Niagara At Large reporter and publisher Doug Draper –

Earlier this fall, in the wake of growing homelessness and dependence of food banks – even among people who have jobs – Niagara Region’s council, much to its credit, pass a motion calling on the provincial and federal government to launch a basic income guarantee project to help lift people out of such dire straights.

Sadly (or should I say disgustingly), the current Ford government in Ontario, which pretends to be a party “working for the people,” gutted a basic income project launched by the former Liberal government of  Kathleen Wynne shortly after it came into power in 2018.

It may very well be that Ford and company will not heed calls to bring such a project back, claiming its recent raising of the minimum wage, which seems designed to keep people in poverty, should be enough.

So a launch of such a program will have to come from Canada’s Liberal government, and in Niagara Liberal MPs like Vance Badawey representing Niagara Centre, and Chris Bittle, representing St. Catharines, should be pressed by their constituents to get on board.

Bittle, in particularly, was recently appointed by his Liberal government to assist in addressing the need for affordable housing. Hopefully he will agree that a guaranteed basic income will help people in their struggle to put and keep a roof of their head.

Now here, directly below, is the call-out for all of us to demand action on this from our elected representatives from the Basic Income Canada Network. – 

This past October 17^th, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, was a fitting day for (Canada’s) Senate finance committee to hear from witnesses on Bill S-233, an Act to develop a national framework for a guaranteed livable basic income. Continue reading →

It was 30 years ago that I wrote about two “old crones” waging battle from a kitchen bunker in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Margherita Howe, twelve years on from her successful fight to clean up the Niagara River, had other fish to, er, unfry. With her was Laura Dodson, who often bankrolled their battles.

Once upon a time and not so long ago, a gathering of three of Niagara, Ontario’s most passionate and effective community acttvists, from left to right, Margherita Howe, Laura Dodson and Judy MacLachlan.

Their adversaries were developers and all-too-pliant town councilors all-too-willing to irrevocably change their beloved Niagara-on-the-Lake.

QUEEN’S PARK – Ford’s Conservatives issued as many Minister’s Zoning Orders (MZOs) to benefit just the guests at a single Ford family wedding reception as the previous government issued during its entire 15 years in power, Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition NDP, revealed (this Monday, October 30^th, 2023). 

“From the Greenbelt grab to forced urban boundary expansions to MZOs, Ford has a deeply troubling pattern of putting his friends ahead of everyone else,” said Stiles. “The Ford Conservatives are already under RCMP criminal investigation for the Greenbelt. This is yet more evidence of sketchy land deals that show just how deep this corruption goes.”

The former Liberal government issued 18 MZOs between 2003 and 2018. The Ford government issued 18 MZOs benefiting just the guests at Ford’s daughter’s wedding reception, which took place on September 25, 2022. Continue reading →
