ST. CATHARINES, ON – Two doctors who treated patients in Gaza, including one from St. Catharines, and who are trying to go back to Gaza, will be speaking at a cultural fundraiser, hosted by the Niagara Gaza Relief Foundation of the Niagara Palestine Coalition (NPC) to help local families save their relatives in Gaza.

Dr. Saif Ullah of St. Catharines volunteered at the Gaza European Hospital in April and has been trying to return but cannot because of the Israeli invasion of Rafah. Also speaking will be Dr. Mohammad Rizwan Minhas who served in a makeshift emergency room in Gaza. Both doctors were in Gaza as part of Humanity Auxillium, a charity serving patients around the world.

The cultural fundraiser starts at 7 pm on Thursday, May 23, at the Fine Grind Cafe on 37 James St. in St. Catharines, Ontario and all funds will go to Niagara families trying to save relatives in Gaza.

Entertainment includes Palestinian poetry translated by Amer Arnaout and curated Palestinian music. A $10 minimum donation includes a choice of coffee or tea. Fine Grind Cafe has supported the cause of Palestine solidarity including providing free coffee at a Niagara demonstration.

Dr. Saif Ullah explained; “My heart and soul are still in Gaza because I witnessed atrocities and genocide against Palestinians. After returning to Niagara last month I knew I will have to go back because part of me will stay with the people of Gaza forever.”

“During my mission I saw so many young kids casualties but I can’t forget Selma, five years old with a blast injury to the head who passed away while I took care of her in the ICU. What did she do to deserve that?

“In every kid there, I was seeing my own children. I wish and pray that the Rafah border opens up soon because I can’t wait to go back and help again.”

NPC spokesperson Susan Howard-Azzeh said; “Dr. Saif Ullah will speak to the challenges of saving lives during this genocide, and the poetry, music, and art will speak to saving Palestinian culture.”

The Niagara Palestine Coalition was founded in the wake of the October crisis in Palestine in 2023 and has members from diverse backgrounds including Palestinians, Jews, Indigenous peoples, academics, union activists, students, youth, retirees, of various faiths, across the Niagara region of Ontario. It has organized weekly demonstrations in Niagara on Sundays as well as fundraisers and educational events.
