St. Catharines/Niagara – Andrea Horwath’s Change for the Better plan offers hope for people in the Niagara region who have been waiting for better-funded local transit and more frequent GO service.
Horwath announced the NDP will build and expand local and regional transit and provide year-round GO rail service between Niagara and Toronto.
“People in this region have been squeezed long enough. It’s time for a change that will look after the growing number of commuters here, connecting them with every opportunity, whether it’s a dream job or a quality education,” Horwath said.
“Everyday people should be able to count on transit in their communities, but that hasn’t been the case under the Liberals and Conservatives. Our change for the better will make it easier and more affordable for Ontarians to get where they need to go. That means taking action to build the transit system that people deserve, no matter where they live in this province.”
Instead of investing in better transit, Doug Ford has vowed to cut at least $6 billion across the board – and to privatize as much as he can. For workers commuting between the Niagara region and Toronto, that could mean less service, much higher prices, or no trains at all.
In April, Ford said he would put a GO train expansion under review, ignoring what people in the Niagara region have been saying for years and putting the entire project at risk.
“The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. Together, we can absolutely get this done,” said Horwath.
The NDP platform – Change for the Better – also makes travel smoother by:
- Restoring the province’s 50 per cent share of net operating costs for municipal transit
- Investing in year-round GO rail service between Niagara and Toronto
- Implementing Southwest Transportation Strategy that integrates and coordinates public transit
- Building the long-awaited Toronto Relief Line and Hamilton LRT projects, investing in two-way, all-day GO rail services between Kitchener-Waterloo and Toronto
- Improved scheduling and integrated fares
