In October, employment in Hamilton increased by 3,400 and employment in St. Catharines-Niagara increased by 2,700 jobs. This is Hamilton’s third consecutive month and St. Catharines-Niagara’s fifth consecutive month of significant job growth

.rovince-wide, Ontario’s unemployment rate decreased to 6.4 per cent in October, and has been lower than the national average for 18 months in a row.

The October job numbers bring the total increase in employment since the recessionary low in June 2009 to 641,100. The majority of these new jobs are full time positions in the private sector and in industries that pay above-average wages.

Retail activity in the province remains strong. Retail sales rose 4.9 per cent and new motor vehicle sales in the province rose 7.3 per cent over the first eight months of 2016, compared to the same period last year.

Ontario’s economy is growing and it is expected to remain one of the fastest-growing in Canada over the next two years.

Through sound financial management, the government is on track to balance the budget next year, in 2017-18, and remain balanced in 2018-19.

Supporting Ontario’s workforce is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.

QUOTE

“Ontario is supporting a positive environment where employers can create good jobs and the economy can grow. October’s job numbers show our economy continues to gain momentum, but we know there is more work to do. We will continue to move forward with our efforts to make our economy more globally competitive, growing it and creating jobs in the process.”  — Brad Duguid, Minister of Economic Development and Growth

  1. An earlier article said Ontario Liberals Continue to Trade Full-Time for Part-Time Jobs – so which is it? Do those increases reflect full-time or part-time jobs? At the risk of being cynical we know that politicians – of any party – use statistics to convey the message that puts them in the best light. Are there any stats for Niagara Falls??

  2. What the MPP fails to tell you is the 3400 new jobs are “PART TIME JOBS”
