Queen’s Park, Toronto, Ontario – This March 2nd, Ontario NDP Transportation critic and MPP for Niagara Falls, Wayne Gates, called on the Wynne government to commit to a timeline for expanding GO Train Service to Niagara Falls.

Wayne Gates, NDPl member of the Ontario legislature for the Riding of Niagara Falls.
“The inclusion of GO to Niagara in the 2016 Budget was a positive step forward and highlights the hard work done by local mayors, councillors, and our Regional Chair,” said Gates. “The expansion of GO Train services to Niagara is not about scoring political points.”
The 2016 Budget specifically mentions GO to Niagara as part of the “next generation of infrastructure projects,” but does not contain any details of a timeline or funding plan for completion of the project.
“Unfortunately, without firm commitments to a timeline, the people of Niagara still cannot be sure when expanded GO service will come to Niagara Falls,” Gates said.
For more than two years Gates, Andrea Horwath, and the Ontario NDP have called on the Premier and her government to expand GO Train Service to Niagara Falls. The project will have a tremendous impact on the region, generating $195 million in economic benefit, as well as creating 2,400 full-time permanent jobs and an additional 1,200 full-time construction jobs during implementation.
“Without a confirmed timeline, the municipalities of the Niagara region that are all united behind this project cannot make plans to take full advantage of the economic benefits GO service expansion will provide,” Gates said.
“Will you commit today to a timeline for two way all day GO to Niagara Falls?” asked Gates.

What good is it to have GO train service to St. Catharines and Niagara Falls if we have no access to it from the rest of the Niagara Region. Let’s get regional public transit at a reasonable cost off the ground so the whole region benefits – not just the north shore communities.
