We all knew this was happening. But that makes it no less infuriating to see it in black and white.
As wildfires rage across the country and thousands are forced to evacuate, Canada’s Big Four oil companies just reported]$13.3 billion in profits in three months — more than double what they made during the same period last year.
But it doesn’t stop there. We dug deeper into their latest disclosures to find out what Big Oil is using these profits for — and it’s déjà vu all over again.
Because the oil and gas industry isn’t using its massive windfall profits to invest in Canadian workers, communities, or even its own infrastructure. In fact, Big Oil execs are bragging that [“shareholder returns remain their top priority”](https://www.taxfairness.ca/civicrm/mailing/url?u=8623&qid=2814616).
That means they’re sending $6 billion straight to their mostly American shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks. Meanwhile, gasoline prices are up more than 20% from last June and are helping drive up the cost of everything from groceries to airfare.
We don’t have to let this happen again.
A windfall profits tax would put these billions to work for Canadians by helping tackle the cost-of-living crisis and invest in renewable energy.
