Niagara Falls’ Provincial Member Of Parliament Says Gasoline Companies Should Stop Gouging Families

From the Constituency Office of Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates

Niagara Falls, Ontario,  August 20th, 2015 – Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates took aim at local gas prices this August 20th, noting that in some areas of St. Catharines gasoline prices were 22 cents lower per litre than in the Niagara Falls Riding.

“The price of a barrel of oil has dropped to one of the lowest levels we have seen in a number of years” Said Gates referring to the fact that the price of oil is at a six year low this week “Yet gasoline prices still do not reflect that drop in the price of a barrel oil and it fluctuates all across the Region. In Niagara, you drive 10 minutes up the road and the price of gas jumps 22 cents a litre – despite the price of a barrel of oil the price of gasoline is all over the place” Said Gates “People simply shouldn’t be paying these higher prices at the pumps”

Gates continued to call on the Liberal government to direct the Ontario Energy Board to monitor the price of gasoline across Ontario in order to reduce price volatility and unfair regional price differences.

“When the price of oil jumps gasoline companies are quick to raise prices on families yet when the price of a barrel oil drops we barely see any relief – it’s gouging.”

Currently a price of a barrel of crude oil is at 41.45$, gas prices topped 112.7 in Niagara Falls and bottomed at 86.4 in St. Catharines. Five provinces in Canada all have some form of provincial gasoline regulations.

  1. It is a ploy by Bradley to encourage those in the GTA to visit St. Catharines to fill up their vehicles with low priced gas. Perhaps this ploy might work to get GO train service – congestion on the QEW

  2. I have always said that the biggest mistake ever, was when the people allowed Brian Mulroney to kill the N.E.B , also sell off Petro Canada , the Albertan Conservatives and their oil patch cronies do not like competition, We always as an oil producing country needed a two tier pricing system for our oil, a cheaper price for our own use and the world price (U.S dollar price ) for export. Pierre Trudeau understood these things a lot better than the obtuse voters, so we are getting gouged at the pumps, that’s our own fault. so we are buying are own gasoline back from the U.S at U.S. prices , insanity. We need to crack our own oil here and benefit are own economy.

  3. We need alternative fuels and alternative means of transportation. The drop in gas prices did not drop the price of anything else for the non-driving consumer, e.g. taxis, transit fares, groceries. To me, it is much ado about nothing and a break only for those who already have a break in the cost of their own transportation.
