A Plea For A Dog In Greece In Desperate Need Of Help

By Lawrence Pinsky

Very rarely do I twist arms but friends, this is one of those times. And, yes, I have no shame!

Amalia may not understand you unless you speak Greek, but he urgently needs your help anyway.

Amalia may not understand you unless you speak Greek, but he urgently needs your help anyway.

I am trying to help a dog, Amalia, in Greece, to get her to safety. She is living on the street and is being beaten occasionally by someone. A rescue group has taken her on but, for lack of resources, is unable to get her to safety though.

I have been sending some money and pestering them, I must admit. The vet took xrays and found she had a fracture to her hip. Not serious, at this point, but painful. She is now getting meds from a volunteer and she is improving but they still can’t get her off the street–and that’s the key need.

I am quite invested emotionally in Amalia and am asking if you can send the rescue a modest donation by paypay. No amount is too small. I would deeply appreciate anything you can manage.

The paypal address for the organization is: gr.filozoikosserron@gmail.com

Assuming you have a paypal account, you just log into your account and click on Send Money. Then you enter the amount and the email address where it is going. After you continue to the next window.

If you scroll down, you have an opportunity to put a subject and a message.

PLEASE cut and paste the following into the subject and the message (It means “for Amalia): Για την Αμαλία .

And PLEASE SHARE with any others who might be amenable to sending a few bucks for Amalia. THANK YOU!!

P.S. – If you do send anything, it is probably best in US funds.

Lawrence Pinsky, from Montreal, Quebec, is an old friend of mine going back to the days when  he and I, Doug Draper and  publisher of Niagara At Large,  studied journalism at the University of Western Ontario, back in the late 1970s when journalism still seemed important and when that London, Ontario university still had a free-standing journalism program. It says something about the state of journalism across the continent today that this department was more or less dissolved into whatever it now is on the campus. But enough of the dying art of journalism.

Lawrence is one of the greatest advocates for other animals we are privileged enough to all share a brief time with on this earth, and I know a good number of animal advocates. So I always take his plea for the welfare of an animal, which he does not always do as wide spread as this one, seriously.

(Niagara At Large invites you to join in the conversation by sharing your views on the content of this post below. For reasons of transparency and promoting civil dialogue, NAL only posts comments from individuals who share their first and last name with their views.)

  1. Hey Lawrence – do you have direct knowledge of the rescue involved in this work? and trust them? I know Doug well and his word goes a long way, by my accounts – and sorry to be so cynical ….but there are now many ‘false’ rescues operating around Europe (and now, particularly, in the communist break-aways) who claim to be helping animals, but are just lining their pockets.

Lawrence: how much do we need to collect to fly the dog here? Is that possible? Can you keep her? Maybe someone who is travelling to the area can pick her up and bring her back. Sheila Krekorian

The organization that is trying to help out Amalia has been thoroughly “vetted” by me. I’m a journalist and researcher and have been involved in animal rescue for over 30 years. The organization is legitimate and their volunteers work tirelessly to provide food, veterinary services, shelters and homes to the many abused animals in Greece.
Update: Amalia is now inside, living in a room at a shelter. She has been traumatized by her experience of being beaten and, apparently, was picked on by other dogs. She is afraid of the other dogs at the shelter at the moment, but there may well be a home waiting for her in Holland or Canada soon. Donations are needed to ensure she gets her vet care, her food, her meds and the expensive carrier and transport as soon as she is well enough to travel…hopefully soon. Her physical ailments are fairly minor; it’s the rehabbing from her trauma that will take the love and care of folks who take her on. We already know that she has a very sweet disposition. Thanks to any effort to help out!
I know there are so many animals in need. I am alerted to so many cases every single day. This sweet girl just grabbed my heartstrings and opened up a whole world that I was not much aware of, the dire situation for so many dogs in Greece.
