Niagara Volunteer Group Hosting Charity Events To Support Animal Assistance Programs

By Kimberly Costello

Niagara Action for Animals (NAfA) is hosting two upcoming fundraisers, the proceeds from which will help animals throughout Niagara.

Buster and Hope, two of the cats in NAfA's care that now need a good home.

Throughout the Niagara Region, thousands of homeless and abandoned animals are euthanized every year due to pet overpopulation. In the past year, close to 2,000 animals were euthanized at the Lincoln County Humane Society alone.

Such daunting figures remind us about the importance of spay/neuter. NAfA believes that spaying or neutering your companion animals is the only effective solution for reducing this tragic cycle of unnecessary death. We must become more conscientious about the local pet overpopulation crisis and be part of the solution by having our companion animals spayed or neutered.

Over the past few years, NAfA has received over 1,000 applications for our low-cost Spay/Neuter Initiative program (SNIP) from residents throughout Niagara. In addition, NAfA also receives numerous requests from residents and businesses to help control feral cat populations through our Trap/ Neuter/ Return programs.

In the past five years, NAfA has spayed/ neutered over 2000 animals throughout Niagara. Being a non-profit charity, NAfA receives no government funding and relies on fundraising events to continue their programs. The past few months have been a struggle for the organization financially as the communities’ need for assistance has surpassed the available financial resources. Proceeds from the upcoming fundraisers play an integral part in helping NAfA continue their spay/neuter programs and community outreach to help animals throughout Niagara.

The Sing Your Heart Out for Animals Karaoke Fundraiser will be held on Saturday February 5th 7:30pm, at Brooklyn’s restaurant in Thorold. The event, which is only $10, promises to be a fun night of karaoke entertainment, prizes and vegan snacks. Tickets are available at the door or by contacting NAfA at niagaraactionforanimals@symaptico.ca

NAfA is also hosting the 9th Annual Photo shoot for People and Pets at Holy Trinity Church located at the market square in Welland. Over the past few years, professional photographer Lori- Ann Franklin of LAF’s
Photography has donated her time and resources to capture memorable
photos of human and non-human Niagara residents. Niagara residents are encouraged to attend this fundraiser to receive a unique and memorable
portrait with or without their furry companions. In past years, this event has raised over $3,000 and NAfA hopes to exceed this amount at
the upcoming event. The cost is a $20 sitting fee, which includes a
free print, with additional prints available at very reasonable prices. Pictures are available to view on site and all proceeds benefit NAfA. Photo Shoot times: Friday February 18th from 3 – 6 pm & 7 – 9 pm; Saturday February 19th from 10 am – 2 pm & 3 – 6 pm; Sunday
February 20th 10 am – 3 pm

Niagara Action for Animals (NAfA) is an all-volunteer registered charity whose mission is to advocate for all animals through education
and community outreach. NAfA envisions a compassionate society that
respects the innate worth of all beings, both human and non-human.

  1. What a terrific program, I believe that coyotes are decimating pets in Black Creek they are brazen and are not afraid of humans, they come into my yard which backs into a wild field and try to catch the rabbits on my lawn I also lost my cat to one, it died of loss of blood , I know that babies or toddlers will be next.my other cat stays close to my porch. and stays inside a lot.
