As March Toward Dictatorship Grows, Trump Pulls The Plug On Jimmy Kimmel Show

A Brief Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted September 18th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Jimmy Kimmel is one of latest victims in Trump’s war on his list of enemies.

Firing, defunding and suing everyone and everything from cancer researcher, vaccination programs, environmental agencies, world-class universities and newspapers like Harvard, National Public Radio (NPR) & TV, and The New York Times,  to making random arrests and putting military boots on the ground in the heart of American cities, Trump is goose-stepping America to a place where no country that takes any pride in calling itself a free and open democracy should go.

One of the most recent casualties in this march toward an authoritarian state is the late night show ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ whose host Jimmy Kimmel has been on Trump’s enemies list for quite some time for opening monologues that have never shied away from tearing strips off Trump and his band of sycophants and enablers when the occasion calls for it – which is almost every day. Ontario Now Has Four Times More Job-Seekers Than Job Openings

Doug Ford’s “look harder” comment explains why Ontario has no jobs plan: because he denies there’s an unemployment problem.

News from Data Shows, a professional, non-partisan data gathering venue based in Ontario, Canada

Posted September 17th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

There were 7,000 fewer job openings in Ontario at the end of June than March and there were more than 200,000 fewer openings than June 30, 2022, according to a Statistics Canada report released Tuesday morning.

The data comes just days after Ontario Premier Doug Ford dismissed job-searchers’ concerns [ https://substack.com/redirect/8b107836-f179-43c9-a953-38db581a1eb3?j=eyJ1IjoiM3g4b3BsIn0.gTyF7RtVaWrg4_JLvD63hvYzJPuyQCsAk-UibLfp0Ec ] in front of a downtown Toronto business audience.

“It drives me nuts” when young people today say they can’t find work, Ford complained to the business crowd as they tucked into their lunch. “If you look hard enough” the jobs are there, the premier said. Continue reading

A Very Sad Farewell To Robert Redford – Film Actor & Director & Life-Long Environmental Activist

A Few Words on Robert Redford’s passing from Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted September 16th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

“Like most people of my generation (born and growing up during the Great Depression of the 1930s and Second Word War eras), I was brought up to believe in progress. I still do. But we are now at a point where we have to ask ourselves if we are beneficiaries of our progress – or the victims. Manifest Destiny doesn’t work anymore. Progress from now on has to mean something different. We’re creating a world a world that is tipping dangerously out of balance. We are running out of places, we’re running out of resources, and we’re running out of time. … It is a pretty lousy legacy we have left our children. …

“What we’re living with is the result of human choices. And it can be changed by making better, wiser choices.” – Robert Redford, from an essay he wrote for a 1991 book paying tribute to 19th Century naturalist and essayist Henry David Thoreau and Walden Woods called “Heaven Is  Under Our Feet.”

With that, this Robert Redford fan was so shaken by the sad news this September 16th that Robert Redford died at age 89 that  I can’t help but pay a little tribute to him.

Robert Redford (left) and Paul Newman, from the 1969 blockbuster ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’

It goes without saying that Robert Redford was a film star with magnetic appeal for both women and men alike. I was still in my teens when I first saw the 1969 film ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’ on the big screen co-starring him and another actor on top of my list of favourites, Paul Newman. There was a chemistry between the two of them that has always had me thinking that if I’m going to go down in a blaze of gunfire, I hope, at least, it is with sidekicks like that. Continue reading

It Was Another Great Weekend For Staying Away From Trumpland

Few are seen crossing the Peace Bridge, or what Trump (with his newly named Department of War) might call the ‘War Bridge’ into the U.S.

A Brief Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted September 15th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

A still image view of the Peace Bridge car and truck lanes into Buffalo, N.Y., this past Saturday, September 13th at 8:46 a.m. when they would normally be filled with long lines of traffic.

With Trump’s tariff war against Canada continuing, and with ugly talk, violence and the militarization of American streets growing worse by the week, it was – indeed – another great weekend for those of us who live in Niagara, Ontario and other regions of our country not to cross that border.

When I clicked on the live stream cameras showing traffic entering the U.S. side from the Peace Bridge crossing this weekend, the traffic lanes were so empty you could have used them for a game of ball hockey with little or no need to move your nets.

Since this past January, after Trump was sworn in as U.S. president for the second time and began sounding off about breaking Canada’s economic back with terrorists and making our country a “51st state,” statistics have been showing that the number of Canadians no longer crossing the border to the United States has been growing. Some recent data showing it has dropped to well over a third of what it was when the man with the orange face and scowl re-entered the Oval Office. Continue reading

Prime Minister Carney Launches Build Canada Homes To Supercharge Homebuilding Across The Country

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney

“Canada’s new government is relentlessly focused on bringing down housing costs. Central to that mission is rapidly scaling up the supply of homes. Build Canada Homes will transform the way government works with the private sector to build. We will create an entirely new housing industry using Canadian technology, Canadian workers, and Canadian resources – and give builders the tools they need to build more, build sustainably, and build at scale.”                                                   – Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada

Polluting Fossil Fuel Project Tops the List of the First Five Projects of National Interest

“The first five projects on (this September 11ths) announced Projects of National Interest lack a focus on clean growth. Toronto, Ontario –This past September 11th’s  announcement (from Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney) of a plan to double the output of the Kitimat LNG facility is reckless, as it would significantly increase climate pollution during a worsening climate crisis.

The additional inclusion of two large mining projects, a port expansion, and a new nuclear plant on the list of projects that may be exempted from environmental laws and their required reviews could also put both the public and Canada’s environment at risk. Continue reading

Here Is To Wishing Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley Well

A Brief Note from Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted September 12, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley,

When, as has been the case since this past mid to late August, you have Niagara regional council and committee meetings, along with public events of interest and concern to the Niagara region, and Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley is not there, you have to wonder if something is wrong.

After all, and as anyone who has been following public affairs in Niagara for decades now may know, Jim Bradley could always be counted on to be there, going back to his days as a St. Catharines city councillor in the 1970s, as a provincial member of parliament for St. Catharines from 1977 to 2018, and for the past more than six and a half years, as Chair of Niagara’s regional government.

As it turned out, Jim Bradley has been receiving hospital care since late August for what has reportedly been described as stroke-like symptoms that come and go away. The condition is more technically known as transient ischemic attacks or TIA for short.

With that, please join me in wishing Jim Bradley a speedy and a very full and healthy recovery.

In the meantime, members of Niagara Regional Council will take turns sitting in the Chair’s seat.

Remembering The 9/11 Terrorist Attacks – Back When The U.S. Still Saw Canada As An Ally & Friend

A Statement by Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney to mark 9/11 and the National Day of Service

Posted September 11th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

A second passenger jet, hijacked by terrorists, hits the soon to tumble Twin Towers in New York City

“On this day 24 years ago, the world was forever changed after the deadliest- ever terrorist attack on American soil. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in this brutal attack, including 24 Canadians.

In the days that followed, Canadians stood with our American neighbours – showing friendship to those who were in need, and solidarity in a time of crisis.

In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, another of many commercial jets full of mainly American passengers stranded in the skies over the U.S., is welcomed to an airport in Gander, Newfoundland where Canadian residents in that province welcomed them into their homes – a gesture of friendship that Trump and his millions of followers seem to have forgotten today.

Nowhere was this more evident than in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, where families opened their homes to thousands of stranded airline passengers, many of whom were American. In that moment, the people of Gander exemplified the compassion and generosity of Canadians.

Today, as we mark the National Day of Service to honour those who stepped up to help in the aftermath of 9/11, we join Americans in remembrance and reflection, renewing the solemn vow to never forget.”

The Ford Government Is Privatizing Our Public Hospitals. That Is Not An Exaggeration!

When they privatized cataract surgeries, Ford appeared all over TV promising that people would never pay with their credit card, only their OHIP card. That was a lie. All over Ontario, seniors are now routinely charged thousands of dollars in the private for-profit eye surgery clinics.

We heard from an 80-year old woman who was told she had to make a down payment of $1,500 followed by almost $11,000 for her surgery. We heard from a 71-year old who had to come out of retirement to work to pay for his surgery. Continue reading

Former Marineland Trainer Voices Concern Over Fate of Animals At The Niagara Falls Amusument Park On Popular CBC Radio Program

A Brief Comment by Doug Draper, followed by a CBC Radio Phone-In Program Featuring Former Marineland Trainer Phil Demers

Former Marineland marine mammal trainer and vocal animal justice activist Phil Demers

With yet another death of a beluga whale reported over the past week, raising the death toll of belugas at the 64-year-old Marineland amusement park in Niagara Falls, Ontario to at least 20 since 2019, how many more might die before the provincial and federal governments finally step in and have the remaining 30 or more belugas and any other remaining animals at the park removed to safe sanctuaries?

This is a question now being asked by animal rights activists and by many others across the Niagara region, province and country as the future of the Marineland park – once billed by its late owner John Holer and his marketers  as the most popular tourist attraction next to the Falls themselves – now hangs in limbo. A Brief Alert To NAL Readers – This Monday Night at 9 P.M., A TV Doc. On The Love Canal Disaster

Shame On We Humans. Because Of Our Lack Of  Care For Other Species, Another Bear Is There For the Killing

A Brief Commentary by Doug Draper

Posted September 5th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

A Black bear wanders over in the direction of people lounging in a nature park in British Columbia.

If any of you watched CBC’s news program The National  this past September 3rd (or even if you didn’t) there was a short segment at the end of the program showing a black bear wandering into Burnaby Mountain Park in British Columbia looking for food in a place where people were lounging around.

At least one couple is seen, continuing to lay there reading a book or something, as the bear ambled closer and closer in a manner that gave no reason for anyone viewing the video to believe that  he was going to attack, which the bear didn’t.

But that didn’t  matter.

The commentator on The National news program said that because that particular bear, seen in the park before, has become so use to coming near humans, “the plan is to put him down.” Continue reading

Ontario NDP Calls For Garden City Skyway Project To Use Canadian Steel To Stand Up Against Trump’s Tariffs

“Ontario workers have the skills, experience, and dedication to build the Garden City Skyway to the highest standards. This project must be built by Canadian workers, with Canadian steel, as a clean commitment to good jobs and fair opportunities.”

A News Release from Ontario’s NDP Official Opposition Party

Posted September 3rd, 2025 on Niagara At Large

The Garden City Skyway, as it looks taking traffic over the Welland Canal today.

(A Brief Foreword from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – If the Ford government barges ahead with plans to twin the Garden City Skyway crossing the Welland Canal in St. Catharines, then by all means use Canadian steel and Canadian workers.

But rather than build a twin bridge to accommodate more car and truck traffic at a time when we should be moving to more public transit, why not use the however many billions of dollars that would cost on building a new hospital for the southern end of Niagara, building affordable housing and shifting to more renewable energy. We could use Canadian building materials and Canadian workers for those projects too.)

QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP and Official Opposition leader Marit Stiles is calling on the Ford government to ensure the Garden City Skyway bridge project is built with Canadian steel and Canadian fabricators.

With the details for the contract still on the table, the Ontario NDP is demanding that Ford make sure public money goes to Ontario workers and Canadian-made steel. Continue reading

Meanwhile, the billionaire owners of the grocery chains like the Westons, who gave their employees a two-dollar-an hour bonus at first to work during such perilous times, turned around a took that bonus away as soon as they could, putting the workers back to the minimum or near minimum wage level that they have lobbied to keep as low as possible for decades now. This Labour Day Weekend, Don’t Cross That Border! Celebrate Our Niagara, Our Ontario, Our Canada

To Hell With Trumpland. Let’s Stay Home And Celebrate Our Own Great Land

A Brief Comment by Doug Draper

As of this last long weekend of summer, Trump and his tens-of-millions of MAGA supporters in the United States continue to target our Canada with punishing trade tariffs in the hope that they can bring us to our knees and make us agree to be annexed as a “51st state.”

Let’s continue to stand together with the pride and strength we have shown for the past seven months of this hostility coming from our neighbours and former friends to the south by waving our flag high and by saying no to travelling to the United States and purchasing anything that is produced there. Niagara Regional Council Members Critical Of Loan To NPCA Are Being Short Sighted

A Comment from Niagara resident and citizen activist and conservationist John Bacher

Posted August 29th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

It was a great delight recently to learn that the increase surge in Canadian visitors has caused the revenues of the Niagara Parks Commission to increase, despite a decline in American tourists to our region.

This, however, makes more vexing, the hostility of some Regional Council members to making a loan for repairs to the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority’s (NPCA) s interpretive facility at Balls Falls. Continue reading

This Time, At Least, A Majority Of Niagara Regional Councillors Side With Struggling Homeowners Over Developers

A News Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted August 28th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Doug Draper, back in the days when reporters in Niagara still worked in newsrooms (this newsroom, the Burgoyne family’s at the once-proud Standard in St. Catharines. file photo,

My mother always used to counsel me to not be one of those people who just go through life complaining all the time, but to go out of my way, when I feel I legitimately can, to “give credit where credit is due.”

It is advice that in all my years as a journalist I have tried to take to heart, although I’m sure that some of those I’ve written about will never believe it.

With that, I believe I have gone out of my way to give credit to those who have deserved and in that spirit, I want to give a shout out to a majority on Niagara’s regional council who, earlier this August, did not cave in to what appeared to be a fair amount of pressure to grant a private developer 40 million of  our municipal tax dollars for a sprawling, $1.8 billion residential complex along the shores of the Welland Recreational Canal, across from Merritt Island in Welland. Ford Government’s Refusal To Fix  Bill 9 – Municipal Accountability Act – Won’t Protect Communities

“Municipalities need real tools to deal with misconduct and create safer, healthier workplaces so more women and diverse candidates feel empowered to serve.”

A Statement by Niagara Centre NDP Official Opposition Party MPP Jeff Burch

Posted August 27th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Niagara Centre NDP MPP Jeff  Burch, questioning Ford government in Ontario legislature

QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario NDP Municipal Affairs critic Jeff Burch (Niagara Centre) is calling out the Ford government for refusing to fix the flaws in Bill 9, the Municipal Accountability Act, after Conservative members voted down key NDP amendments at committee this August 26th, 2025.

“This past August 26th, in committee, we saw again how unwilling this government is to listen, and to fix the serious flaws in Bill 9, the Municipal Accountability

“We put forward a simple, fair amendment: let an independent judge, not political colleagues, rightfully decide when a councillor’s behaviour is so egregious that removal is necessary. Government members voted it down. Expecting a council to reach a unanimous vote to expel one of their own is unrealistic, and leaves municipalities stuck with the same dysfunction Bill 9 is supposed to address. Continue reading

Ford Government Ignores Public & Official Party Opposition Calls For Passing An Ameded Bill 9 – Municipal Accountability Act

Ford Leaves It To Municipal Councils To Decide Whether Or Not To Remove A Councillor For Egregious Actions

“There always seems to be a reason for this (Ontario Ford) government to not pass this legislation. It is not a difficult task. Creating a safe working environment requires clear workplace protections. This is the third iteration of this legislation. It’s been debated for three years. (Ontario Municipal Affairs) Minister (Rob) Flack knows exactly what is needed to get this right.”                                  – Haley Bateman, a Niagara Regional Councillor for St. Catharines and member of the province-wide citizens advocacy group Women of Ontario Say No

A News Release from St. Catharines Regional Councillor Haley Bateman

Niagara, Ontario – If Bill 9, the Municipal Accountability Act moves forward as currently proposed, the power to remove a councillor for egregious actions will rest solely with their fellow councillors—requiring full attendance and unanimous support from Council.

Haley Bateman, a Councillor with the Region of Niagara and advocate with Women of Ontario Say No, is raising alarms about the implications of this approach. She warns that without key amendments; the legislation could make municipal politics a far more dangerous place to work and participate in. Continue reading

50 Years Of One Of The Greatest Rock Songs Of All Time

A Brief Tribute to Bruce Springsteen and the song that made him the ‘Boss’

By Doug Draper

Posted August 25th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

“Baby this town rips the bones from your back. It’s a death trap, a suicide rap. We got to get out while we’re young.”

Bruce Springsteen was already rising rapidly to the top of the pantheon of rock stars when on August 25th, 1975, he and his E Street Band released a song he composed that would forever brand him in the world of popular music as ‘The Boss’.

That song was the epic anthem ‘Born To Run’ and within a matter of weeks of its climb to the top of the Billboard charts, Springsteen was on the cover of both Time and Newsweek magazines – a feat that was virtually unprecedented for any popular musician before or after – with music writers hailing him at the same time as ‘the new Bob Dylan’ for the depth of substance and imagery in the lyrics of that song and others he had penned. Hey Mayor Diodati – Need More Money For The New Niagara Falls Hospital? How About Getting It From Your Pal Doug Ford

Municipalities In The South End Of Niagara Should Have A New Hospital Of Their Own

A News Commentary by Doug Draper

Posted August 20th, 2025 on Niagara At Large!

The new Niagara Health Hospital – questionably being referred to as the ‘South Niagara Hosptial’ – under construction in Niagara Falls.

With the exception of Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati’s own council and that of Pelham Mayor Marvin Junkin, it seems that four other municipalities in Niagara’s south end – Welland, Port Colborne, Fort Erie and Wainfleet – are so far being less than committal when it comes to paying up, what between all six of them, would total $72.5 million for the construction of a new hospital in Niagara Falls.

To the four south Niagara municipalities holding out, Diodati, who also serves as co-chair for the new hospital’s fund raising campaign, was recently quoted in a local newspaper saying; “I’m just pleading with everybody to prioritize this. Give what you can now with a commitment to help out more as you’re able because (this hospital) will touch every one of our lives at some point, and we’re going to be glad that we did it.” Continue reading

Lyrics by Joni Mitchell, from the song Woodstock

A Brief Note from Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted August 14th, 2025

I find myself needing a little escape from all the news because, to be quite honest about it, I am on the verge of burn-out – and I am not just talking about  the extreme heat we have been suffering through lately.

So in my mind, I am going to journey back to a sprawling farm pasture in a rural community called Bethel, New York where on August 15th, 16th &17th 1969 the musicians who provided the soundtrack for the counter-culture of the 1960s gathered for that era’s high-water mark at the Woodstock Music & Art Festival.

What unfolded on that pasture land in the Catskills of New York in the summer of ’69 was, in so many ways, a fantasy, and a very fleeting one at that. After those three days of “peace and music,” as they were called at the time, it  mostly all went downhill from there. Continue reading

Fires, Heat, And The Fight For Climate Action

“Climate action has been pushed down on the government’s list of priorities. Not because the crisis is any less urgent, but because Donald Trump’s return to the White House has thrown global politics and trade into turmoil.”

A Message from the Green Party of Canada

Posted August 13th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Right now, thousands of Canadians are under evacuation orders or fire bans. Newfoundland is facing the worst wildfires we’ve seen there. In B.C., wildfires have cut off towns and knocked out power. In P.E.I., temperatures hit levels not seen in decades, while Ontario and Quebec sweltered through dangerous heat waves.

We know what’s driving this. And we know it will only get worse unless governments stop propping up the fossil fuel industry and start acting like the emergency is real.

But here’s the hard truth.

Please Stop Calling It The ‘South Niagara Hospital’ – Because IT IS NOT A Hospital For Niagara’s South End!

South Niagara Needs A New Hospital Of Its Own

A Brief Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted August 12th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

During a recent walk down the main street of the South Niagara community of Ridgeway in Fort Erie, I noticed that a number of stores had signs in their windows that read; “Save Our Hospital.”

I found myself responding to one of the store owners by saying; “As someone now living in the North end of Niagara but who grew up in Niagara’s south end, I fully support you. However, I am afraid that horse left the barn a long time ago.”

What I met by that is that over the past 12 years since Niagara Health, the organization Ontario’s former Mike Harris government founded in 1999 to amalgamate all of our region’s hospital services under one body, opened the super hospitals in west St. Catharines, hospitals in Niagara’s south end got short changed.
