If you are a full-blooded political junkie like me, you may be finding it a little bit harder to stay awake today after staying up well after midnight this October 20th to learn the news that an overwhelming 76 per cent of Albertans voted in a referendum drawn up by separatists in that province to remain in Canada.
But for those of us who believe in a united Canada, the late night wait for the results of that brexit-like referendum was worth it.
And it was certainly worth it to know that as much as Albertans may have their differences with other regions in Canada, they love the country enough that they want to remain part of it.
As for the separatists, shame on them for putting us all through this spectacle at a time when we have a President of the United States who has made it clear, time and time again, that he relishes the idea of annexing Canada and turning it into a 51st state, Ir is hard not to believe that this separatist movement offered Trump some comfort in that goal.
I have said it before and I will say it again, if these folks don’t like being part of Canada, there is nothing stopping them from packing their bags and moving to Trump’s America. Let them see how they like it there.
Now here is a brief statement on the turnout on the referendum to leave Canada from Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney –
“On October 19, Albertans made a clear choice. They chose unity, to build together, and to take care of each other.
Above all, Albertans chose Canada.
While votes on all questions continue to be tallied, tonight’s results on the defining question of separation mean that Albertans and all Canadians will move forward together with renewed purpose and high ambition.
We are building that future, bigger and faster than ever before. Canada is securing new trade partners around the world, fast-tracking major, nation-building projects in every part of the country, and unleashing our full potential as a global energy superpower with Alberta at its core.
