With less than two years left before the Monday, October 26th municipal elections across Niagara and the rest of Ontario, we need to make sure that first, we make sure we go out and vote, and second and most importantly, we vote for candidates that promise to address our interests and concerns, and not just those of developers and other special interests.
In the meantime, when candidates running for mayor or for a council seat in your municipality come knocking at your door or participate in an all-candidates debate, make sure you ask them what they plan to do to address the struggles of everyday municipal taxpayers and their families.
With Ontario Premier Doug Ford and his government gutting democracy at our regional level of government, our local municipal councils have become more important than ever. We need to make sure that we fill local council seats with fellow citizens who ill stand up for the interests of we, the people.
With the exception of a small handful of incumbents, including (and sorry if I left a few out) the current Mayor of Fort Erie, Wayne Redekop, and a handful of incumbent councillors like Bruce Williamson in the Port Dalhousie ward of St. Catharines, incumbent Tim O’Hare in Thorold, and Gary Burroughs in Niagara-on-the-Lake, there is a whole lot of change that we have got to make.
Let us all vote as if our collective future depends on it, because it does.
