The Kind Of Canada We Aspire To Build ‘Is Being Rapidly Stripped Away’

“A clear sign of an economy that isn’t working for everyone is one where the heaviest burden falls on people who work for a living, while the ultra-rich are able to skirt their responsibilities. And that’s the reality in Canada today.”

A Labour Day Message from Canadians for Tax Fairness

Posted September 7th, 2026 on Niagara At Large

On Labour Day , we reflect on, celebrate, and honour the achievements of working people in Canada.

At Canadians for Tax Fairness (C4TF), we stand in solidarity with workers across the labour movement, and we’re deeply grateful for the many years of support and partnership from Canadian unions. In fact, C4TF would not exist today without the support of our allies in the labour movement from day one.

But here’s the thing: the kind of Canada we aspire to build—a country where everyone can afford a home, put food on the table, and thrive, with access to the public services we all depend on, from healthcare and education to transit and green infrastructure—is rapidly being stripped away.

A clear sign of an economy that isn’t working for everyone is one where the heaviest burden falls on people who work for a living, while the ultra-rich are able to skirt their responsibilities. And that’s the reality in Canada today.

Earlier this year, our research revealed just how stark this imbalance has become. In [A Tale of Two Tax Seasons](https://www.taxfairness.ca/civicrm/mailing/url?u=8704&qid=2868755), we found that in 2022, after taking all taxes into account, the top 1% of earners paid 23.6% of their income in tax, while the average earner paid 36.7%. In Canada today, CEOs get a free pass, while their employees pick up the tab.

Doing the research and exposing these alarming inequalities is critical. But ensuring policymakers act to correct this imbalance isn’t easy, and we can’t do it alone.

This Labour Day, take action for a fairer tax system, one where those with the greatest means finally pay their fair share.

In solidarity,
