St. Catharines NDP MPP Jennie Stevens
St. CATHARINES – NDP MPP Jennie Stevens (St. Catharines) released a statement following the announcement from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) that ten offices will be closed and the organization is cutting nearly 500 jobs:
“We have learned that the WSIB is cutting hundreds of jobs and closing ten offices across Ontario, including the St. Catharines office.
“These cuts will mean the loss of good local jobs and, importantly, the loss of experienced, high-seniority workers who carry years of institutional knowledge about Ontario’s workers’ compensation system.
“It is difficult to reconcile these cuts with Premier Doug Ford’s recent message to St. Catharines residents touting the creation of 119,000 jobs in Ontario and his intent to bring more jobs to Niagara, over the past four months.
“These cuts will also have consequences for injured workers who rely on the WSIB when they are at their most vulnerable. Fewer experienced staff could mean longer claim-processing times and greater delays for workers who need that income to pay rent, buy groceries, and support their families.
“The government and the WSIB need to explain why these cuts are happening, why St. Catharines is losing its office, and how removing hundreds of experienced workers will improve service for the people who depend on it.”
