QUEEN’S PARK – NDP MPP Jennie Stevens (St. Catherines) tabled a motion (this May 27th) calling on the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to use powers under Sections 17 and 18 of the Environmental Protection Act to hold General Motors accountable for remediation of the former Ontario Street GM property in St. Catharines:
“Fifteen years after General Motors abandoned the Ontario Street site, St. Catharines residents are still living beside contamination, unanswered questions, and a complete lack of accountability,” said MPP Stevens.
“Families deserve to know their water, soil, and air are safe, and taxpayers should not be left paying to clean up a mess created by a multinational corporation. That’s why we are calling on the Minister to use the powers available under Sections 17 and 18 of the Environmental Protection Act to hold GM accountable for remediation.
“This community has waited long enough for action, transparency, and a real plan to protect public health and finally restore this site for community use.”

My brother worked at this site for several years, and died of cancer. Before he died, he speculated that his cancer was brought on from working here due to the cadium used in this facility. With all of GM’s trillions of dollars, why is this site still standing, and why hasn’t it been cleaned up? I fear for the residents living in this neighborhood, and why hasn’t the government done anything about it??
