A Brief Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, spending time last year with Donald Trump down in his Mar-a-Lago den for the most rich and privileged.
While so many of us in the rest of Canada have stood up for our country’s sovereignty and for the values our country cherishes in the wake of Trump’s punishing tariffs and “51st state” threats against us, the screwball Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, and sizable segment of her ultra-right wing Conservative Party are supporting referendums for people in their province to vote on to leave Canada.
My understanding, from many of the news reports I have read and listened to, is that a majority of Albertans do not support this push to split with Canada. A majority in that province want to stay in our country.
I hope that is true, and if it is, my message to those in Alberta who want to leave is: “Go all the way right now. Move to the United States under Trump and see how much you like it there.

Perhaps when Smith’s separatist fanatics find out how much they will be digging into their own pockets for basic essentials like gasoline, food, housing and health care, day care and education for their children, and how much more they will be paying in taxes compared to the upper few per cent of some of richest barons in the world, they will wish they could come back here.
But why should we let them. After all, our Canada deserves better than having these nuts back here screaming for more of our tax money to pay for putting out their wildfires and building more of their tar sand pipes?
Let them stew in all of their anger and hatred down there in Trumpland where they belong.
Then the rest of us can look forward to enjoying another nice Canada Day this July 1st, 2026.
