Fewer Canadians Want To Visit the U.S. Now That The Friendship’s Gone
A News Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Five years ago this week, the Peace Bridge between Fort Erie, Ontario and Buffalo, N.Y., like all border crossings between Canada and the United States, closed to all but “essential” traffic due to COVID-19 spread.
It was five years ago this week that the COVID-19 pandemic began sweeping across North America to a point where governments in Canada and the United States were declaring a states of emergency.
At the same time, Canada-U.S. border crossings, including the Peace Bridge and Rainbow Bridge spanning the Niagara River, were closed to all but “essential” commercial trade-related traffic in a frantic effort to curb the spread of this highly infectious disease.
Now, thanks not to a health crisis like COVID, but to a dangerous idiot in the White House named Donald Trump who is using punishing tariffs in an effort to crush Canada’s economy and threaten its sovereignty, Canadian travel to the United States has dropped to its lowest levels since around the time the COVID border crossing restrictions were lifted some three years ago.
According to a number of reports, the reasons growing numbers of Canadians are now choosing not to cross over to the United States vary.
One reason is the drop in the value of Canadian dollar against U.S. currency and counter tariffs of up to 25 percent that are now being charged to us if and when we return from the U.S. with groceries or other purchased products produced in the United States.
The other reason is a combination of betrayal, anger and fear many Canadians now feel toward a country that for generations had been looked upon as a close friend and ally.
I still remember my wife and I crossing the Peace Bridge to Buffalo, N.Y. late last year and having a good day with people there while visiting some of our favourite old haunts.
Kamala Harris, was running against Trump as the Democratic candidate in the race for the U.S. presidency, and most of the people we talked to about the election were so confident that she would beat this fraudster and convicted felon.
Well, what a difference an election and a couple of months can make.
Now here we are, along with so many other of our fellow Canadians, wondering if or when we will ever return to the United States again to visit those old haunts and enjoy the company of good friends and, in some cases, relatives who are now unfortunate enough to live in that Trump-infested country.
Like COVID-19 was from March 2000 through most of the following three years, Trump and his many wacked out followers are a scourge on both of our lands.

Let’s Continue Standing Together for our Canada by Buying as many Canadian products as we can and by Boycotting trips to the U.S.A. and all products produced there. And let’s work hard at building closer ties with Mexico, with the United Kingdom, and with other more friendly countries in Europe and elsewhere in the world.
