Roadside Zoos – How & Why Are We Still Doing This In Ontario?

“Other provinces have implemented provincial licencing systems (for roadside zoos) to prevent  abuse from taking place – but among all of them, Ontario ranks dead last.”

Today in not-so-fun-facts: In Ontario, you don’t need any sort of license to operate a private zoo. If you have the money you can purchase a lion, tiger or camel, and charge visitors to come and see it – living conditions be damned.

If you got our recent news about penned dog hunting (find out more about that by clicking on – https://gpo.ca/issues/dog-hunting/ ) it should be no surprise that Ford allows Ontario’s animals to be treated this way.

Without any regulations or licencing, Ontario’s roadside zoos allow exotic animals to be kept in tiny cages without proper enrichment; with insufficient protection from cold and heat, and complete disregard for animals’ complex social needs – the list goes on and on.

Tell Doug Ford to put an end to roadside zoos](https://secure.gpo.ca/civicrm/mailing/url?u=200746&qid=102502165)

It’s time for Ontario to follow suit.

If you thought this was a Canada-wide problem you’d be wrong!

Other provinces have implemented provincial licencing systems to prevent this abuse from taking place – but among all of them, Ontario ranks dead last.

Right now there are thousands of animals being scorched in the summer heat with no relief.

Ontario Greens are calling on the Ford government to take immediate steps to implement the standards laid out by World Animal Protection to create real protections and enforcement for animal care.

And that’s just the first step towards banning roadside zoos once and for all.

  • Sincerely, Ontario Greens

  1. i’d like to think this would change – but seems unlikely with Ford in charge. I will respond to the link – we have to keep bugging the Cons (or any political party in charge) ’til they implement change

  2. it is disheartening and appalling that Ontario government allows encaged, captive wild or domestic animals held in unlicensed “so called zoos”. It is just as disheartening that the public still supports such abusive and cruel captivity. When will we evolve to a much higher level of compassion , sensitivity for innocent, voiceless animals. We have known for decades how depressed sentient animals become in those horid deprived confinments. SO SO SAD.
