A Sign of Our Turbulent and Troubling Times

A Brief Comment from Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted July 15th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

A long-time Niagara At Large reader recently shared with me  the following image of a sign located somewhere in the United States of America –

As I read the sign, the message I receive from it is that maybe if we could just reboot the country the way we sometimes reboot a computer, it will go back to behaving normally again.

Given all of the threats – politically and culturally – now plaguing that country, one can only wish that overcoming them could be that simple.

In the view of this long-time observer of current affairs in the United States and as a friend of many concerned people who live there, I am not so sure that anything like a reboot will undo what now seems like a growing possibility that Donald Trump will win another four-year term as that country’s president.

I hope I am proven wrong, but if I’m not wrong, we Canadians better start planning for what we are going to do to protect ourselves and the interests of our country if Trump gets that chance to take his country and the rest of the world to a darker, more dangerous place.

Finally, my wife and I enjoyed a nice day in Buffalo this past Sunday – less than 24 hours after the attempted assassination of the former president at a campaign rally. To the extent that the shocking shooting incident came up with Buffalo residents we crossed paths with, the general reaction from them was; “We want to get rid of Trump, but not that way. We want to see him voted out.”

I share their thoughts on this  terrible shooting incident . Deadly violence or the threat of violence should have no place in the politics of a free  and democratic country, or in any country for that matter.

But in all due respect to those who shared their hope that Trump will go down to defeat in a free and fair election, , it has become increasingly unclear to this observer that there may on be enough Americans going to the polls this coming November to make that happen.

Please Anerica, prove me wrong!

Donald Trump has announced at the Republican National Convention that JD Vance will be his running mate for Vice President and if that doesn’t scare you just think who will represent the Republicans in the 2028 elections if Donald decides to step down. Trumpism will not be going away anytime soon and just for the record take a guess who is really good friends with JD. If you guessed Don Jr you are right and he might just be the next candidate for Vice President of the USA and that is REALLY SCARY!!
