Fort Erie, Ontario Mayor Wayne Redekop

“As a community, we mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning monarch in British history. As head of state not only for Britain, but also for the parliamentary democracies of the British

“Commonwealth, including Canada, she provided continuity and stability during transitions of power and times of crisis.  She epitomized grace, dignity, duty, and public service ? an example and role model during a time of diminishing courtesy and decorum.

“Queen Elizabeth was familiar to all of us, and yet most Canadians never met or came close to being near her.

“She was small in stature yet, in a matter-of-fact manner, she exuded power.  We could identify with her doubts, her odd misstep and occasional uncertainty, just as we could exult in her strength of character, sense of propriety, reliability, and seemingly endless smile. She referred to Canada as her second home.

You did not need to be a monarchist to admire her.  The Queen’s passing brings to a close a most remarkable life.  We begin anew with the new king, Charles III.

Flags at Town Hall will fly at half-staff for 10 days.  A book of condolences will be available in the atrium of Town Hall for those who wish to express condolences to the family of Queen Elizabeth.
