More Highways Aren’t The Answer To Ontario’s Transportation Needs

“The climate emergency is here, and if we want to avoid the worst of it we need to urgently rethink transportation in Ontario.”

A News Release from Ontario’s Green Party

Posted August 24th, 2021 on Niagara At Large

The (United Nation’s) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently put out areport predicting climate disaster unless urgent measures are taken to rapidly curb carbon emissions.

But apparently Doug Ford didn’t get the memo, because his discussion paper for the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) Transportation Plan includes pumping more money into new highways that will pave over the Greenbelt.

More highways aren’t the answer to Ontario’s transportation needs.

In addition to paving over wetlands and farmlands, more highways will lead to even more cars on the road. Meaning more toxic emissions being pumped into the air, intensifying the climate crisis and worsening our air quality.

Transportation is already the largest source of carbon emissions in Ontario.

WE CAN’T AFFORD TO PUMP EVEN MORE CARBON EMISSIONS INTO THE AIR.

Tell Doug Ford his transportation plan doesn’t make sense

We need to rapidly decarbonize transportation in Ontario. That means

INVESTING IN ELECTRIFIED, AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE TRANSIT.

And reimagining how we build our communities so we can move away from sprawl-based development and towards LIVABLE AND AFFORDABLE 15 MINUTE COMMUNITIES.

The climate emergency is here, and if we want to avoid the worst of it we need to urgently rethink transportation in Ontario.

So add your voice today and tell Doug Ford that more carbon emissions and more highways through the Greenbelt is not the path forward. If you’ve already submitted your letter – THANK YOU! Can you kindly share with people?

THIS IS THE LAST WEEK TO OFFER FEEDBACK TO THE GOVERNMENT ON THEIR FLAWED GGH TRANSPORT PLAN. Consultation closes Saturday, August 28th.

Sincerely, Abhijeet Manay Deputy Leader and Ontario Green Candidate for Beaches East-York

  2. As somebody who does not drive, I am tired of seeing my tax dollars spent on more things I don’t use … it has been years since I been on a highway, even as a passenger. The pandemic did not help. Time to put more money into alternative forms of transportation. What happened to all that bruhalluh over the Go Train to Niagara?
