A Brief Commentary by Doug Draper

New York State was flying so high in the eyes of the world before suddenly crashing down.
One short year ago, he was riding so high as one of the world-wide leaders in fighting COVID-19.
Many of us on both sides of the New York, Ontario border were tuning into his daily press briefings back then, impressed with the way he was addressing the COVID crisis and rallying people in his state to work together to beat this killer virus down.
Then it all came crashing down.
This August 10th, after serving close to three full terms as New York’s governor, he announced that he would be resigning in 14 days. The gravity of the harassment allegations against him, followed by a virtually complete lack of support among fellow Democrats, up to and including U.S. President Joe Biden, left him little or no room to hold on.
He will be replaced by the state’s current Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul who (correct me if I am wrong) will be the first female governor in New York State’s history. Hopefully she will be as good to New York’s Canadian neighbours and to border communities in the state like Buffalo that Cuomo appeared to be.
Kathy Hochul, age 62, should be a good friend of greater Niagara region communities on both sides of the border since she was born in Buffalo, New York.
Now here is a statement that Buffalo, N.Y. area Congressman Brian Higgins released this August 10th on the incoming New York State Governor –
A Statement from Congressman Brian Higgins on New York’s 57th Governor, Kathy Hochul

The incoming Governor of New York State, Buffalo-born Kathy Hochul
“From her earliest days as a local official to her time as my colleague in Congress and her service as Lieutenant Governor, Kathy Hochul’s sole priority has always been the people. Kathy is a public servant of integrity who works hard to listen to and deliver for the communities she represents. She will be an excellent Governor and will make New Yorkers proud.”
Higgins and Hochul are longtime friends and colleagues who served together to represent Western New York in the House of Representatives.
